Upping normal items

I have a 37 res all heraldic shield, going to put spirit in it. Is it possible to up a non unique, non rare, non magic item to an exceptional or can you only do this for uniques? Should I do it before making it spirit or after (or does it not make a difference!)? Finally if anyone has the recipes that would be greatly appreciated (up to excepitional and up to elite) as I am getting confused with the ones I have seen. Currently playing EuScL (think that may make a difference as well)

You can only upgrade uniques and rares.

I'm sorry but your heraldic shield will have to stay heraldic.


P.S. note that it's not that important for a hammerdin and that spirit is cheap so you can always make a better one when you find a better base shield.
P.P.S. all realms are equal.

there is a way of upping that shield:

1. let charsi imbue it to rare status
2. use the cube recipe for upping rare items
3. regret your decision because now you can't make a runeword in it

you can see all the recipes and most other info about the game here

Problem with that is the shield will lose it's inherent 37% resist all mod when you imbue it. Which pretty much ruins the reason for upping it in the first place.
