"Upped" uniques? Please clarify

I've read multiple posts where people mention using upped uniques (just below this post is one mentioning an upped vipermagi). Could somone please explain what this means? I've searched but haven't had any luck.

Thanks,
Dan

When they say "Upped", they mean upgraded. You can upgrade a normal unique to an exceptional unique (on nonladder and ladder), and on ladder only, you can upgrade an exceptional unique into an elite unique...

This means that it changes the base item of the uniqe (for example, chance guards begin as chain gloves ... a normal unique) into the exceptional version of the same item... (so in the chance guards case, it would become heavy bracers. The items mods would remain the same, however, the defense would change from that of the chain gloves, to that of heavy bracers. So instead of having 20-30 defense on your chancies, you'd have 60+. It's only done to increase the defense... when you upgrade really good exceptional items, you can get a huge boost of defense.

To upgrade (or "up") these items, you must use your horadric cube and certain rune recipes along with the item. Upgrading from normal to exceptional is rather cheap, however, upgrading exceptional to unique can be a little more expensive.

I personally can't find the information on diabloii.net, but I'm sure if you look around there or Arreats Summit you could find more information on it... or I'm sure someone else could supply the link, or even further information.

I hope this helped...

there is a cube recipe whereby you can turn a normal unique into an exceptional unique, and another for exceptional into elite. This changes the base item type, so in addition to getting higher def in the case of armor, you will also get a higher str requirement.

Oops... forgot to mention that.

That'd be the downside.

For armor exceptional to elite
Lem+Ko+pdiamond+exceptional unique armor = Elite unque armor
So to speak serpentskin skin of vipermagi become wurmhide skin of vipermagi... Boost of deffense rather enorgomous from ~263 to 941
Upping normal to exceptional rather cheap Tal Shael Pdiamond
For example upping nighsmoke from belt it become mesh belt (12 slots before 16 after) ~63 deffence

Theres a glitch when upgrading Ethereal Exceptional Uniques. When you upgrade it, it doesnt count in the Ethereal Bonus. So you'll have a basic Up'ed Vipermagi that cant be repaired and with half the durability. :cheesy:

Yes, the magi would keep its ethereal property. But as Arieta stated, the ethereal property is currently bugged. :grrr:

Another interesting note is that when upgrading the unique levels are added to its level requirement. For example, lets say i had a Visceratuant, (the unique defender) and decided to upgrade it to the elite version (heater). The current level requirement for Visceratuant is 28. First you must take the level requirement for the upgraded version (heater) which is 43. If you are upgrading an item exceptional to elite the game automatically adds +7 to its level requirement meaning the "upped" Visceratuant would have a level requirement of 50 and not 43.

Just for clarification: upgrading from normal -> exceptional yields a +5 level requirement penalty. And upgrading from exceptional -> elite yields a +7.

Meaning that if you wanted to upgrade rixots keen to the elite version (falcata) you would have to add +12 levels onto the existing level 42 requirement of the falcata, bringing the grand total to level 54 requirement.

Hopefully this clears up any questions!! :drink: cheers.
