    Hello,

When a normal, socketed item is made into a Rune Word (e.g., Rhyme), do the formulas for upgrading unique items apply?

For example, can a Rhyme bone shield be upgraded to a Rhyme grim shield using the cube formula for upgrade a 'normal' unique armor than 'exceptional' unique armor?

I apologize if this question has been answered previously, but a search did not return any results.

No, you can't. Once you make a runeword in a base there is no way to change it at all.

    Not strictly true.

I remember accidentally converting a perfectly good ethereal insight elite polearm into a worthless blue using the 3 perfect gems recipe.

Well, you almost remember right! I didn't believe you, so I had to try it out. It's actually the 3 normal gem recipe that does it.

Cool fact, never knew that! And it's been months since I fired up D2, so thanks ;)
