Upgrading items in general

Hello,

I know how to upgrade items and I've done it many times before, and I have also done google searches concerning my inquiry. Maybe I'm thick-headed, but I am still confused. Here is my question:

1) When you upgrade something, does the % enhanced damage and defense even matter anymore? I have a 200% ed pair of goreriders, but when I upgraded them I failed to get the best mymr greaves defense (if I read the numbers correctly). So, would a 'p upped' pair of gores refer to the perfect defense mymr greaves can have, or just any 200% ed upgraded pair? I would think the former because I have upgraded magefists and lower % ed mages have gotten higher overall D than higher % ed mages.

2) Really, I'm wondering about an ethereal Hoz. This is where I'm really confused because of the ethereal-ness. I have seen a site that has a 200% ed ethereal upped hoz, but it didn't obtain the highest D possible (which I think is 867 D. SO, does this means that the % ed is effectively negated when upgrading an eth hoz? Can any eth hoz obtain the perfect D after upgraded?

For all armors with %ED the base defense of the item will be the max of the base item type +1 *when dropped*. When upping an item, it gets a normal roll between the min and max defense of the base upped item. So perfect upped gores would be gores with perfect %ED and a perfect roll on the defense when upped.

For some items it is actually possible to get a lower defense when upping. This happens when defense ranges of exceptional and elite items overlap. Vampire Gaze is a common example of this.
