Upgrade or Quit?
Hello Diabloii Forum.
I am an old geezer who has taken up Diablo ii late in life. My son (Mike) played quite a bit of Diablo & thru him, I developed an interest in the game. Alas, he has gone on to college and different pursuits and he now no longer has time to coach & help me in Diablo. At Mike’s suggestion, I now am turning to the Forum for some basic help.
Mike always told me that single play on Diablo was inappropriate, however, he & his group were always too fast for me & given my age, I just enjoyed playing at a bit slower pace and playing when I wanted to without securing other gamers. Now it appears that I am paying for my choices, as I have risen to the Hell level and I appear to be knocking my head against the Blizzard walls of Hell.
In late 2003 I read Hal’s excellent set of suggestions on building a Concentrate Barbarian. Hal’s suggestions of heavy defense combined with synergy from the other skills persuaded me to build a Concentrate Barbarian as he suggested. Today, I am at a Level 73 Barbarian, playing in Hell, in Act I, looking for the Malus. However, I am regularly getting my character killed, losing experience for each of my many miscues, and I wonder if I need to restart with a new character or give up the game entirely.
Briefly (hopefully this is not too boring) my character is summarized as;
Levels
1) Strength – 170
2) Dexterity – 216
3) Vitality – 148
4) Energy - 20
Resistances
1) Fire 57
2) Cold 13
3) Lightning 40
4) Poison 57
Skills
1) Concentrate 19
2) Sword Mastery 15
3) Axe Mastery 9
4) Iron Skin 5
5) Natural resistances 10
6) Shout 17
7) Battle Orders 15
8) Misc skills below the mentioned skills above at 2
Equipment; Saul Scythe Ancient Sword (secondary weapon Eagle Sever Executioner Sword), Viper Brow Jawbone Cap, Godly Hyperion of Protection Shield, Corpse Wrap Ornate Plate armor, Bone Mark Amulet, Bone Eye Ring, Havoc Loop Ring, and other assorted lesser pieces of equipment.
I developed the same mercenary over time, Protham (Level 73) and he is summarized as;
Level
1) Strength 169
2) Dexterity 136
3) Damage 430-804
4) Defense 1792
Resistences
1) Fire 75
2) Cold 38
3) Lightning 38
4) Poison 38
Protham’s equipment includes Pierre Tombale Couant Partizan, Dusk Shroud Armor & Darksight Helm Basinet.
My problem(s) seem to be;
1) An inability to deal with Wraiths. While I have some magic to use to kill these ghosts, they effectively hamper me & tie me up while other Bosses deliver the kill shot.
2) My weapons either lack enough magic or strength to quickly take out the minor characters, hence, I seem easy prey to the Boss characters when they appear to support the minor villains.
3) While the Concentrate, Shout, & Battle Order skills provide me with significant boosts to Strength, Dexterity, and Vitality, I still take one shot & poof I am gone.
4) As an older player, my dexterity in manipulating the character & utilizing my skills is probably sub-par. I can not do much about this, as I was not raised in cyber space gaming, but I always thought I could think my way thru bad situations instead of “reflex†my way through them. Perhaps this is not true in Single Player Hell situations.
Any supportive suggestions, even if advising to give up the game, are welcome.
