    Upgrade a what's it?

Everyone is always talking about ugrading items and i'm afraid i just don't understand. I have tried looking it up but it just says uprgrades item XXX to elite version or some such blather i don't understand.

Now, i'm no n00b, i have level 90+'s but I never tried the uprgrade formulas yet and was curious what they do.

a "noob" doesn't exist in my eyes, only newbies

noob is just a word used by some people for all other people who are

    a) worse then themself or
    b) better then themself

ah whatever, you probably noticed that there are items with different names but, but the same look, like a short sword looks like a gladius looks like a falcata

so if you upgrade a unique short sword (rixot's keen) it will become a gladius, and if you upgrade it again it will become a falcata, but all the time it will have the stats of rixot's keen.

And because rixot's keen stats aren't any special, noone would ever waste the runes to upgrade it of course

The general idea is it changes the base class that the unique item is based on. Some weapons and armors are really great to do this on, others not so much. For example if you took a bonesnap unique maul and upgraded it twice you would have a bonesnap unique ogre maul with the same stats as a bonesnap, but does WAY more damage... +300% ed, 40% crushing blow ogre maul so it'd be like 424 max damage instead of 172

Do shields count as armor? What about boots/gloves/helms? Or does "armor" only refer to body armor?

Shields/Gloves/Belts/Boots/helms all count as armor. yes they can be upgraded

Only Rares and Uniques can be upgraded. Not runewords.

Just remember one thing that so many idiots seem to forget about the upgrade recipes. The exceptional unique-->elite unique recipes ONLY work for ladder characters.
