Update on St. Petersburg church fire

Freet locked the origional thread so the update is a new one.

Just like I thought. It was the welders that started the fire. I hope they and their corrupt bosses spend many years in Siberia contemplating their failings.

    That's really unfortuante...

My home church caught fire in 2000 and burned 1/3 of it to the ground. It's not easy for a congregation to go through.

More likely due to incompetence than corruption. Although both are common in Russia, I hear.

I didn't mean that as slander, it's just that Russia is going through very tough times economically.

They're not doing that bad. They just paid their debts off to the so called Paris Club, totalling some 22.300.000.000 dollars, thus making history in doing the the biggest one-time transaction in the history of this 1956 started debtor club.

Oh, and paid us their debts dating from the Soviet times too.

It's how the money is spent. In relative numbers, compared to, say, Western Europe, education, health care and apartment building aren't seeing very much of this money.

It's just that I've known a few Russian ex-patriots who've told me the place is practically run by criminal organisations and corruption is rife in the government. One of my wife's friends has known a fair few people who've "disappeared" too.

That's hard times in many other forms, but not necessarily economically - GNP might be hurt by that but it isn't enough to pull it down completely.

However, what you're saying is true. It's not a safe hood for everyone.

The impression I got was that economic hardship was the source of the other problems.
