Untwinked guardian Katastrofi - Frost Zealer

Hello everyone. This is my second guardian. Again, no mods or gomule for extended stash.

Katastrofi (Catastrophe) started as a holy fire paladin and respeced to holy freeze at around level 20.

I had the luxury of finding "General's Tan Do Li Ga" flail early which was used till nightmare act 4 when I got unique rune scepter (Zakarum's Hand) from a rack in durance level 3. Rune scepter was very funny weapon with a chance to cast level 6 blizzard on striking. Final weapon came in to play in late hell act 1. I had runes for Crescent Moon, which I have been drooling over every time I make a zealer. But I wanted to make it in a PB and only saw one white one which was cubed for 4 sockets.

Bloodfist was used till late hell when I found those nice rare gloves and got enough light res to switch boots for goblin toe.

Normal & nightmare were somewhat easy (players 1 & players 4 mostly). Entering hell was quite shocking (0% crushing blow at this point). Blood moor was too dangerous place and the battle against Corpsefire was EPIC. After a couple of Mausoleum & Crypt runs, I had the confidence to move on. Slowly killing cold immunes or running away from them.
Fastforward to Crystalline passage: this is when the game got so much harder. Almost every monster is cold immune. Reanimated Horde (also cold immune) was the nemesis of this paladin. Absolutely terrifying! I was dodging these guys in the frozen tunnels like crazy.
Last area of the game was easy except for the act 2 minions. Achmel had so rapid life regeneration that it was nearly impossible to kill. Crushing blow got its life very close to zero but pure damage would not get the job done. Had to resurrect mercenary to kill it with him.

I almost respeced to charger paladin when I found Cloudcrack 2h sword in nightmare act 3. I know its not that good sword but it would have been thematic. Fell in love with the charge skill during this play-through.

Future plans with this character: stack belt full of big rejuvenation pots then kill Pindleskin and Nihlathak. Tried to do Pindle after rescuing Anya but it was too strong and got scared so I had to run away! Maybe hunt down that 3os PB and make Crescent Moon just for fun.

Next character: thinking about bow amazon, dragon talon assasin or summoning druid.

I have learned to play through the game without dying but I cannot say the same about my mercenaries. They are every time very weak and I lose interest in them pretty fast.

The guy before Katastrofi... Probably didn't pay too much attention and died in act 2 nightmare.


Zakarum's Hand in action. Blizzard was very bad ass looking but not very effective.


Something is not right in this picture. The door way was not passable until the door was destroyed.



I could not resist running Andariel a few times with these maps.


There was an additional minion pack. No town portals, didn't hang around there for long... Teleport is OP.


Same thing again as with the first guardian. I see it more often than Isenhart's breast plate.

I am considering untwinked HC. It sounds scary! :eek:

Well done.
I used to play sc & hc twinked with massive stashs in gomule. The problem for me in that kind of gameplay is that the upgrades to gear usually come from stash and not from monsters. You are just waiting to get to certain level to get the item you have farmed in high level areas with your cookie cutter characters. Game feels more satisfying untwinked.

It is also very fun to sell this type of items to vendors for few kilos.


And yes it is scary sometimes but it makes you very dedicated to the character you are playing. I strongly advice you to toke it!

Great guardian, congrats! Just out of curiosity, why did you go for Salvation rather than Sacrifice? I would think having more physical damage (+better leech) might have made handling all the CI monsters in A5 Hell at least a little easier. Plus, Salvation is a fairly weak synergy for the Holy Fire/Freeze/Shock skills generally (unless you're going twinked with Infinity, I assume).

I thought that my weapon is quite low damage, it would be better off to just increase cold damage and crushing blow will give enough damage to handle cold immunes. Leech was also totally dismissed.

I did some calculations (not guaranteed):
Point in salvation gives ~14 damage when holy freeze is level 21 (~200 damage unsynergized).
Point in sacrifice increases damage with ~20 with black knout and 90 strength.

Maybe next time do the maths before guardian!

Especially untwinked, when not going for efficiency (e.g. not a UT99er), I think more often than not having a solid secondary attack type (physical) is more beneficial thank piling on the primary type (cold), so even if the cold added a little more damage, it may have been more useful to have the added physical damage.

In this case it's largely irrelevant, since you managed this stylish guardian regardless, but it's still fun to talk about and consider. Congrats again!
