Untwinked Bone Necro

Untwinked Bone Necro

First Note: I used the search tool and spent a good while rummaging through the posts, but didn't find anything about this topic, however I'm sorry if I over looked one.

Anyway...

I may be crazy, I may just be bored, but whatever it is, something told me today while I was MFing on Mephisto that it would be fun to try and make an untwinked bone necro. I argued with my brain for a while, mentioning that bone necros need good items. I also pointed out that if you don't have full gear setup, you wont know how much str to get. But then I decided something, as I finished off the run. MFing and starting new characters that last until it gets old really isn't fun. I need a challenge. So I said "Brain, you're right. That would be fun." And this is what i set my goals to:

-Untwinked, so no muling all that good stuff your sorc has lying around
-Ability to dish out good Spear and Spirit damage
-Being able to withstand a good about of hits (or divert/tank them)
(Here comes the kicker)
-Get this necro to...lvl...90!

Obviously, since it's untwinked, it's not a PvP build. Since I'm making it a Ladder character, I may make it PvP after it resets, but since that is a long way off, I'm going to focus on PvM. Now here come my last minute questions:

1. Since this build is going to use what it finds, what str should I aim for? Vipermagi wont be too hard, as a Simple NM/Hell forge will pay for one easy. But maybe I should try to get something else? And in that case, what str should I aim for?

2. As far as dex goes, I was thinking 75 would be good since Wizspike is fairly cheap. Is that right?

3. Energy wise, I was thinking Base at first. But since I wont have good mana boost items til later on, I thought maybe 50-75 ish Energy until I get some better gear from Forge runes or other good drops.

That's pretty much it. Thanks for any advice, and wish me luck, this is gunna be a tough build.

EDIT: Oh yea, I forgot a question. What skills should I max/get at all? I was thinking just the traditionally spear/spirit syn + clay golem as a tank?

Are you planning on trading ? Trading will make it easier to get good items but of course lessen the "challenge" .

Yes, I'm going to trade if I can get any good items. What I'm avoiding is:

Getting rushed by my freind (or anybody for that matter).
I didn't mention this, but I wont move onto the next act until all quests are done.
Muling all my awesome stuff to this necro.

I mainly need help figuring out what str to aim for. Other than that, most things seem pretty straight forward. I was thinking maybe 100 str is good, what do you think?

Great idea, my first 1.10 Ladder char was a bone necro, and I can tell you that playing him fas f-u-n :) (no rushing for me :p ). I went the max block route, and I can tell you that it was the best choice I ever made with him.. IMO, resists are easy to get, especially if you are going to trade for items, so why not max block? You're gonna need it if you ever plan to duel vs. melee chars.
But anyways, around 110 strength sounds good to me (provided you will get some +str from charms / equip, of course), since you most likely will want to get some marrows when you get to the end of nightmare.
75 dex is fine if you want to go the vita route & get a wizzy, but I still suggest that you max block (Homunculus is really cheap and easy to get) but it's your choice :) .
As for energy, I didn't put a single point in it myself, but I did just fine thanks to mana potions. Since all the acts have now got vendors selling mana potions, putting points in energy has become almost completely useless.. Base worked for me, and I think it'll work for you too

Oh, and GL with your new necro

Ok, here's what I'm doing:

Since I hate relying on +stat gear unless I already have it, I'm going for 118, in the event I can actually get some Marrowalks. I'm going to get 50 energy, since it's helpful in the beggining, and just go for Wizzy and Vita. Like I said, this isn't really going to be a dueling character, more of a challenge. And a learning experience :) Thanks for the advice.

I'm working on a mostly untwinked bone necro. I'm not bothering with block, I find that so far I don't get hit very much by melee and bone armor takes care of that.
just started a5 norm and I have 65 energy (probably stop there) and 58 str to wear a rare mesh belt I had.
me and my level 1 summons (choice of 3 golems, 1 skele, 1 mage) and a3 lightning merc and level 4 bone spear cleared out Chaos Sanctuary all by myself but I had to get help with Diablo, I couldn't stay alive long enough to do much damage.

My first character this ladder season was an un-twinked, un-rushed bone necro and he is the best character I've ever made. Energy up to 75 just in case I need the mana, Strength at around 80, max block, and the rest in vite. I haven't found any especially troublesome spots throughout the game at all. High level Holy Freeze merc and a clay golem take care of everything else with me.

Ok, time for an update on my Bonemancer:

First off, I handled act 1 and 2 no problem. My freind helped me kill Duriel. About...half an hour into act 3 I realized that I had to succumb to those stupid quests -.- I broke my first goal by getting a rush. However, I'm still going strong and untwinked.

As far as Baal runs go, I can easily crush any monsters. My spirit is doing just over 1k damage with my +skill gear (got a nice +1 to psn and bone skill wand from duriel :D). I also got a Nigels in Arcane and traded that to a desperate MFer for a Homonuculs. I have 50 base energy, and around 70 str ATM. I already god 75 base dex, so I can pop on that Wizzy when I get it.

My gear is essentially what I can find. I plan on doing NM HellForge ASAP. Maybe I'll land a Ko and can trade for a decent Res Vipermagi. I haven't put any points in Prision, hoping that I can get a marrowwalk. I planned on leveling that skill last anyway.

I got spear to lvl 12 and I'm gunna let it sit there for a while, atleast until I get marrowwalks. If I don't get any, I may need those 8 skill points somewhere else. Even though I'm primarily PvM, I'm going pure Bone, no Curses.

Ok, enough about me, now I have a suggestion for some of you that are getting bored with the whole hum-drum MFing of your normal day:

1. Pick a character class that you haven't really pursued, one that you've always considered difficult.

2. Find a skill planner (I used the one on www.D2Items.com [sorry if I'm not alowed to post site here]) and play around with some skill combos. Don't factor in any plus skill gear. Remember not to use a specific build, it's not as much fun.

3. Start up your character. Go through the quests as you please and level in whatever way your instincts tell you. It;s your choice to get rushed or not. I personally did, but that's only becuase Act 3 pissed me off.

4. Here's my challenge to you. Take this character you have no experience with to lvl 50. See how it plays. At lvl 50, you'll have (or atleast have the potential to have) maxed your most powerfull skill. If you like it, try taking it to hell. Get it to lvl 70. At that point you can have maxed 2 or even 3 synergies, and have some serious damage.

5. Lets say at level 50, you've decided you screwed over the build. Look at your skill choices, and see what you did wrong. Try making another one.

I have ALOT of experience with sorceress, I wanted to expand my knowledge. My necro's almost level 50, and at that point I'll decide whether it's a dud, or if it's good enough to go to hell. I think the most fun about this is the fact it's untwinked. When you find something decent (but something you'd throw away normally) you kinda get that undescribable feeling of enjoyment that you don't get normally. I STRONGLY suggest that anyone who hasn't do this, it's something I think all Diablo players should try.

To those accepting this challenge, I wish you luck.

P.S. I'd like it if you report in with some of your characters and tell me how it does

Just a curiousioty question....Wouldn't purposly tradeing for an item make it twinked? After all what's the difference if you mule it or trade for it if you are planning on having certain gear before you even start the build?

I always took "untwinked" to mean that you wear only what you find and/or buy/gamble from the mercents (not includeing the player merchants).

I think all bone necros need to learn to effectively use Bone Wall. You can shoot through them and every synergy point helps both it, bone armor and your attack skills. Bone Wall can block a number of attacks and give monster something to attack before they can get to you.

Another thing: Don't cast bone walls unless you're sure that monsters can't come up behind you. It will attract every single monster that you've spawned, including those that can cast blizzard 2-3 screens away (mephisto). Learned that the hard way.

Not just walls. Back on the old ladder I tried a bonemancer; wasn't too thrilled by him since he didn't have the gear, but he was my first character to make it into A4 hell.

Back then, I loved boneprison --- I would just boneprison, boneprison, and more boneprison act bosses (just like with walls --- I would build at least two with a few seconds in between, so if one was killed by the monsters or timed out I would still have the 2nd line, giving me time to make another line of walls, and use spear to slowly nibble their hitpoints away. I used walls to build barriers around me or block the way (in open areas I would build things in a \_/ shape to take advantage of the stupid D2 pathfinding of the monsters), but vs single targets I usually used prison.

Nowadays, with my skelemancer, I hate boneprison, since my wand casts them occasionally :) I really need to get a Gull dagger, so I have a reason to weaponswitch the wand away...

Yes bone walls are great, very habdy vs. big D, it will block his fire nova, and even for 1/4 frame that pink light, thought not the fissure.

not getting any curses is kind of stupid.. especially if you want to have fun. it's not like 10 points less in a synnergy is gonna break your bs damage.
