Ugh my comptrudo

My family members go on some questionable sites (in terms of security) while on my computer, and it has led to the acquisition of a trojan horse and/or <A TITLE="Click for more information about adware" STYLE="text-decoration: none; border-bottom: medium solid green;" HREF="http://messagebroadcaster.net/bannerfarm/link/sw/sw.htm">adware</A> programs. I updated my norton definitions and deleted some things that were found but the problems remain:

My homepage keeps switching / constant ads.

The computer always seems like its busy (takes a while to load things).

All attempts to open any type of security program fail (they automatically exit for no reason [Adaware, regedit, even the ctrl+alt+del window won't work]).

My yahoo search results end up in just ads, nothing relevant to my searches.

Its annoying as hell, and my anti virus thing won't work.

What can I do? I'm not really experienced with reformatting or reimaging, and I never used system restore, so can anyone give me some hints on what to do?

Right, your "family members" go on "questionable" sites while on your computer? Have "they" been looking at naughty things? :fish: Maybe "they" need to be more careful next time.

And maybe "someone" should try to post something helpful rather than "not".

Reformating/Reinstalling Windows is a farely simple task. It may seem daunting to those that havn't done it a few times though.

Not too sure what to say about the trojan though, wish I could help more with that.

Well my sister typed her name in a search engine and clicked one of the links, managed to get a trojan just from that. My little brother is just as dumb when it comes to knowing what you are doing on the internet.

There's two programs I'd recommend for you, dodomac.

First off, Ad Aware. I don't personally use it, anymore, but it seems to work just fine. You can download it at http://www.lavasoft.de

Please make certain you download the latest version and then run any update function the program has, to make certain you are as up-to-date as possible. There is a freeware version as well as a pay version.

The other is Spybot - Search&Destroy. This is the one I use. Works fine. You can download it at http://www.safer-networking.org

Again, make certain you download and install the most recent version. Once installed, check for updates and install those.

If you do not yet have one, also purchase/download an antivirus application. There's quite a few out there.

I'd recommend either:

Symantec's Norton Antivirus ( http://symantec.com )

or

Network Associates McAfee Virus Scanner ( http://www.networkassociates.com )

Both cost money, but antivirus is definetly something to invest some cash in.

There ARE free antivirus programs that are good...I just don't know any, offhand. :p

Again, after installing an antivirus program, make certain you download and install ALL of its updates.

While you're at it, you can grab a free firewall program, ZoneAlarm, from http://www.zonelabs.com

I do not recommend using BlackICE Defender. I do not think it is even supported, anymore.(May be wrong on that)

There are other firewall solutions. If you have a router, those can usually function as a splendid firewall.

I'm certain other forum-goers can enlighten you on other products, I'm just listing what I typically use. ;)

I recommend you get "HijackThis!". It's a simple program that helps you identify where in your start-up your system is getting hijacked. Anyway, there should be a link for the software on Spybot_Search and Destroys website or on their support forum. Probably the easiest thing to do is to run the program then post the results there. The poeple on the forum are super-cool and knowledgeable and if not completely swamped will look through your log and find the crap and help you eliminate it. Anyway, here is the link to the forums for you to check out...click here . Good luck.

if it does i'll go into more detail, or if i bother to google it now.

I don't even know what I have... I tried running Adaware in safe mode as Zebra suggested, and I quarantined about 40 ad objects, but my security programs still won't stay on and my system still always seems busy=\ I ran anti-virus again and it still didn't work...

I haven't payed attention to the homepage it changes it to but next time it does I'll keep an eye out.

Can anyone tell me how to use system restore?

I'm not sure if system restore would help in this case because it doesn't actually delete files..it just resets settings and such to an earlier time..so you might be fine for a couple of seconds and it'll start all over again...

Sounds like you need to nuke your hard drive

The bugger is actually a trojan so no amount of adaware or spybot scans will help you. Anyways, this is what i think you have. It lists all the webpages it could re-direct you to, so that may help.

I'd recommend you go to zone labs and download "Zone Alarm" (there is a free version). This is considered one of the best firewalls on the market, and might be able to help block whatever is on your computer long enough to isolate and destroy it.

Aside from that, my knowledge is limited.
