    Trying to get in shape--suggestions?

I'm trying to shapen up a bit. I've been really inactive the past 2 years and I'd like be a little more defined than I am. The past two weeks I've cut down on my candy intake (I ...love candy..:p), and have been focusing on getting more protein in my diet (more beans & eggs mainly). Everyday I've stretched, jump roped for ~10 min and done about 30 pushups...and its damn hard for me, but its been getting easier even if I've been doing it for only 2 weeks now. I also do about 40 situps every other day and 20 squats(I'm increasing these numbers as I'm able><).

I'd like to know if this is going to get me anywhere..what I should change, diet, etc.

I don't have access to anything more than barbells, jumprope, and a bar (for pullups).

    I'm 16 years old, 5'10", 135 lb. (So yeah, I'm fairly small).

    Thanks :D

Wow were almost the exact same size. I'm 16, 5' 10'' and 140 lb. Crazy stuff

I suggest getting some weights and then going here

Run, wrestle, or take up a sparring intensive martial art. Lifting can do the oppisite of what you want. Are you looking to get big and beefy or have lots of endurance with a little less strength?

I'm 20 5'10" and about 142 lbs. Just remember your metabolism starts slowing down once you've stopped growing.

The best way to get into shape is running or swimming. Lifting weights will make you strong, but if your muscles are hidden under fat you'll never see them (not that I can imagine you have much fat on you at 5'10" and 135). Lower weight at higher reps makes them more toned.

As far as diet goes, if you burn more calories than you take in, you're going to lose weight. Protein helps build muscle faster (I think). Stretching, weight lifting, pushups, pullups, situps, and jogging all combined will probably give you a decent level of fitness.

Swimming or bike has lower injury rate than running. as for protein, anything that isn't used right away is converted into energy (used to form glucose) so slight elevations for people in the habit of hitting the gym is good but for the kind of workout you are discribing it is useless. If you go too far with the protein thing you can actually overwork your kidneys (they both metabolize the excess protein and have to filter out the byproducts) this is actually part of what the atkins diet does. the huge amounts of protein overwork the kidney and can cause renal failure. but hey, some people like dialysis
