I. Inception

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Trials of Balthazar!

I've been playing the Diablo franchise since 1999, when I was seven years old. I watched my stepdad fight The Butcher and heard that infamous line - "Mmmm, fresh meat!" - and I instantly knew I absolutely wanted to play Diablo. I was of course terrible at it, but I found joy in trying. Eventually, I moved on to Diablo 2. I still remember watching the screen as the bulb filled every time a new patch dropped, and the hours it would take because we had dial-up internet. It took years before I was good enough to beat Normal mode on my own, and it wasn't until I was 14 that I finally managed to beat the game on Hell mode. I had my breaks, but I always came back to it.

Here I am, twenty years later, and I've accomplished just about everything I've ever wanted to do in Diablo 2. However, there are a couple of things I've never quite finished:

  • Pat/Guardian an untwinked Barbarian
  • Complete a S/U Grail (Got down to just Hommunculus and Templar's Might at one point, though.)
I switched to hardcore years ago, which is why the grail went unfinished. As for the barbarian... I've tried. I just hate it. The only exception I've found was with a throwbarb I made a long time ago, but I got bored in A2 Hell. The challenge of it was the only reason I'd even made it that far.

Now, my goal is to complete these last two thorns in my side.

II. Concept

The pitzerker, created and perfected by the legendary Fabian. The highest efficiency item finder in the game to date and my build of choice for this character for that reason. It also plays unlike any other barbarian, is challenging to master, and incredibly intense to play. It is also pretty risky, especially in hardcore. That makes me like it even more.

I don't want to play a singer. I know it's safer, easier to gear, and almost as efficient... but I don't want it to be that safe. I don't want to be unconcerned with my character's safety. I also don't want to play any build of any character that relies on a mercenary to kill things quickly. No thank you.

III. Rules
  • Untwinked - All items must be found, purchased, crafted, etc. by Balthazar alone.
  • Ladder Runewords enabled
  • Extended stash via GoMule (both to and from)
  • Hardcore - I mean this wholeheartedly. Some people make exceptions to a death if it was caused by a glitch like the infamous Fire Enchant bug... I do not. No revives, period.
IV. The Plan

I will be updating Balthazar's progress at least once per Act until he has beaten hell. After that, updates will coincide with gear upgrades, interesting finds, and grail progress.

Sounds cool. Also sounds very difficult to get going, before you have the necessary gear to make it work. Looking forward to reading more :).

ACT I NORMAL

Balthazar started out as most of my characters do - running the superchest in the house out in the Blood Moore. This time it was very close to the Cold Plains entrance, so the waypoint there was VERY convenient. I find this to be my favorite way to start so I can gather chipped gems, jewels (possibly of Envy), and the usual suspects for getting a decent sum of gold early such as wands, staves, scepters, throwing knives and poison/explosive potions.

By the time I was done gathering supplies from the house, I had about 100,000 gold in GoMule and Balthazar was covered head to toe in low level rares.

From that point, I cleared up to the Black Marsh and ran countess until lvl19. It took a couple of hours but left me flush with low runes and chipped gems.

This is where I chose to do something I've only done once before and hope to never do again- Gem shrine runs.
I was fortunate enough to get two shrines very close to my Cold Plains waypoint, along with the Bishibosh camp smack in the middle of those shrines. So, I killed Bishibosh on most of the runs. My goal was to shrine up five perfect topazes.
This required twenty gem shrines.
It took four hours.

On a slightly amusing note, Bishibosh dropped Arctic Furs -> Biggins Bonnet -> Arctic Furs -> Biggins Bonnet... etc. In that exact order, until I had 8 of each by the end. Kind of funny.

Once I had all five perfect topazes, I put two in a cap and three in a ring mail. That was when I finished the remainder of Act I and began running Andariel. Why would I do that, you ask? Because I was hoping for a Gull dagger or two, and it's much more entertaining than running Coldcrow.

After six hours of running Andariel, I had no Gull dagger. I did find some other low TC uniques like lenymo, bane ash, hand of broc, etc.

But that was about all the time I was willing to spend searching for a Gull dagger.

All in all, Act I consisted of about 15 hours of gameplay for me, and I moved into Act II at level 23.

Also, good luck! Barbs are always fun to me. I love the interplay of howl and taunt.

Thank you very much for that helpful bit of info. I'll update the post with a gear readout when I'm finished with my work. I'm going to search around the forum for a post on useful formatting tips.

As far as the unusual start... I didn't used to do the chest runs in Blood Moore, but once upon a midnight dreary I was on a new character and the chest happened to pop a few rare bits of jewellery and I thought "Hey, I could run this like LK for a bit and get some great starting money..."
That's the story of my weirdness. Certainly not the most time effecient thing to do, but I'm in no hurry. Plus, I've always enjoyed seeing superchests pop. It's got a certain satisfaction to it. :D

ACT II NORMAL

Ahh, my second favorite Act.

Sadly, because of my hatred for Barbarian gameplay at this level and my impatience to get to Act 5 Normal, I did not take my time here.

I've been maximizing Howl after dumping points into 1 bash/6 double swing so I can swing without using mana. This is where it shines. I howled my way through the entirety of Act 2, fighting only when absolutely necessary. There were no drops to speak of, really. I did take the time to make some Flails (3x Ral and a Steel) but otherwise there were no gear changes at all. Still no amulet. :'(

The 2x Crushflange I acquired from Andariel came in very handy at Duriel, as did the forty or so full rejuvs I managed to cube up from all the small rejuvs I saved while running in Act I.

I don't expect that the next two Acts will differ in strategy; the sooner I can run Eldritch, the sooner I can slow down and actually focus on character progression.

ACT III NORMAL

As I thought, this went much the same way as Act II. I Howled my way through the jungle, completing each quest along the way. I must say that Howl's utility in allowing me to rush through content relatively unscathed is invaluable at this stage.

The council was a breeze. I howled, switched to my crushflanges for the fire resist, and lured them as best I could manage one at a time outside. When I got away from the mass of Hyrdas, I switched back to my flails and beat whomever had followed me to a bloody pulp. Slowly. But still.

Mephisto was far less intimidating than I had imagined he would be. The charged bolts hurt a bit, but not overly-so. The ice ball was a good laugh. It took about four minutes and a belt full of health potions, but he fell all the same. Not a single set or unique despite my considerable MF.

I left Act III with the same gear I left Act II in, so see above if interested.

ACT IV NORMAL

Now this hurt. Everything up to the actual Chaos Sanctuary was relatively easy, but that place was not fun. By this point, both my Merc and I were doing very poor damage, so progress was moving at a sub-snail pace. So, I made the decision to head back to Act II (Keep in mind, Balthazar hadn't leveled since Act I where he reached 23) and clear the Tombs of Tal Rasha for a while. So I cleared every single tomb six times.

This took about seven hours, but I was now level 30. I chose Tombs for the density and large amount of undead, which were more easily dispatched by my flails. Berzerk was now available, and with it's Howl synergy the damage was more than respectable. But, I needed a better weapon. Thank Trang'Oul for gambling. It wasn't the best I could've hoped for, but it was the best I could manage to get.

God, I love playing untwinked. Heck, I just love finding rares. This may not be the godliest of items, but it's exactly what I needed. I decided to spend the rest of my savings gambling another War Hammer so I could double swing while farming Eldritch (berserk is great damage, but too slow for what I need until I get a much better weapon.).

Trang'Oul smiled upon the again, with this wonderful skull-popper, which I promptly socketed with an Ith.

Progression Update

Alright everyone, it's been about two weeks and I have been working a few hours each day on Balthazar.

The first thing I did was run Eldritch until I hit lvl 40. This netted me a decent amount of new uniques and sets, but by far the most important drop was this beauty (which I upgraded with the cube immediately)

Sadly, it wasn't a very good roll on ED (200-300 roll, landed 237 :( ) but it absolutely gets the job done for now. As soon as I got this and upgraded it to a War Club, I switched to running Pindle.

For the vast majority of these last couple of weeks, Pindle has been my sole target. I know some people are confused as to why I might choose to run Normal Pindle of all things, so I will briefly explain. Firstly, his mlvl is 45 and he is capable of dropping many very useful items. Secondly, experience isn't too terrible for Normal considering the speed of the runs. Balthazar is currently level 55. Though, it would take thousands upon thousands of runs to gain a new level now. Might happen, might not. Thirdly, rares at this point (depending on the base item, but most armors, belts, helms, gloves, etc. in the normal base category) can be VERY good.

Finally, he can drop Steeldriver. This is my main reason for running him at this stage. I'm a bit obsessed at this point with getting him to drop it, but the drop rate is... very bad. VERY. Bad. At this stage though, I've gotten over 70 rare Great Mauls. So that is encouraging (if a bit frustrating.... not as frustrating as the dozen unique Great Axes I've gotten though.)
but I don't know how long I will continue running him before I move on to Nightmare. Could be a day or two, could be a month. This project is very long-term focused, and I'm in no real hurry to progress.

This is such a cool project - you're making me consider doing something similar! I'll think about it :) Trapsin might be fun with trying to self find good claws, and I've never really played one

Congrats on the progress. Already nice finds, especially the SoJ, even if it's not really useful for your Barb.

I absolutely love Bonesnap. It's slow, but nothing even comes close to it's raw damage at that level. The resists and CB are icing on the cake.

Today, after months of grinding Normal Pindle...

Well, I'd hoped to come back victorious, with and end to the tale of my absolute obsession of getting Pindleskin to drop Steeldriver for me. However, today, I am here to lament the passing of my dearest Balthazar.

I recently got a puppy, and in the middle of a Pindle run he started to pee on the floor. I got up, (paused, or so I thought...) took him outside and waited for him to finish his business.

Alas, I did not pause. I also didn't have a mercenary at the time, because I found he caused the minions to get in my way more often than not.

All in all, this resulted in the death of a dearly beloved character. I'd put over 500 hours into pindle runs in the last few months.... and now it's over.

For now.
