    Treasure distribution in multiplayer

Hello! My girlfriend and I are pretty new to Diablo II altogether and we've only played online together, never in a public game, and hence have never worried about what happens when treasure drops - we both just pick up whatever and figure out who needs it when we get to town. What is the general way in which treasure is handled in public games when something nice drops? We didn't want to trample any norms in the Diablo world, nor get taken advantage of ;) Any general public game advice would be appreciated!

It's every man/woman for themselves... unless you're playing with friends, it's a feeding frenzy for drops. At least they changed telekinesis in a previous patch. It used to be that a Sorceress could beat anyone to the punch because casting telekinesis would pick up everything in a certain radius from where you clicked. Now it can only pick up keys and potions/scrolls.

Pubby games are generally anarchistic and ruleless. Norms? There are none, except to expect that you get pissed off from time to time.

When it comes to drops, its finders keepers.

Wow, I see. Thanks for the heads up!

So, is it common for people to join random public games and play in a completely different area than the other players, simply to take advantage of the higher player count in the game, never seeing the other people? Or generally does everyone fight together and then engage in a clickfest over the treasure that drops?

    4 main types of games

baal run games- in this type of game...most people cluster together for the exp..and this mean drops are out for grabs.. 1party usually -usually frowned on to have separate parties

mf games- usually a random mixture of letters and numbers in this type of game most people are killing andariel, mephisto, or some of the uniques -pindle, eldritch etc. If you join this type of game..it probably wont last long but in this type of game its fine to create multiple parties and since usually its 1 party in 1 area,...the drops belong to the parties

quest games-you'll see 1 party usually and again drops are out for grabs...you'll usually get spammed to join the main party but if you dont want to thats fine...warning though...in hell quest games...because of the high player count, some of the weaker characters cant do jack squat in helping the party which becomes helpless...they'll either spam you in this case help out or leave the game to make a smaller player count game where they can kill things

open games - sometimes called a person name..etc...these games sometimes last longer...alllows for what type of game it sounds like you guys want..mulitple parties are fine in these games and the drops should then be yours.

Note...there are some people that will spam that you should party them..you can squelch these people in the party screen (loook on the right side of that characters name in the party screen-its 1 of the 2 options)) thats if you dont want to worry about the drops..If someone mentions they have an item...dont even bother replying most of the time...your statement of interest in that item is usually followed by a "wug" = what you got? If you read more on this forum..you'll see this is an immediate turnoff for many people

    Hopefully this helps ya

    edit: More info

Alternatively, you can stay away from the cesspool anarchy of battlenet and do passworded TCP/IP games with people you have some reason to trust. Check out the Single Player forum in the Strategy Fora for threads organizing multiplayer games.
