Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

I will try this tournament! I have always loved the idea of crafting. :) Thank you kestegs to telling me the name of the tournament. Currently a level 14 barb. Done with the underground tunnel, began the third quest and have completed the two first quests so far.

EDIT: I'm updating here because i don't want to doublepost.

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

Sure, you can use anything until after act 1 NM. I can also almost guarantee you will end up with some gear with CtC nova or something else, as its really common on crafted gear.

Made a bit of progress. Killed eldrich and realized that the entrance to abaddon was really close to the WP! That is a really safe place for me to level, so I'll likely try to hang out there until at least level 65 or so, as I'm currently 60.

Nice progress Purple, Your almost there!

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

Well done Purple, and good luck for the final leg.

A few more crafts left Crafty at 52/-13/66/-41 which may just suffice for a crack at hell.

He's slogged through to the inner cloister on P3.

I haven't used any of my non-crafting pgems yet. Ideas for those?
And I'm still not sure which skills to boost.

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

I haven't used any of my non-crafting pgems yet. Ideas for those?
Reroll charms and jewels?

That´s what I do with them, mostly Small- and Grand Charms (trying to get resists and +life).

Pala the Impalazon has made it to Upper Kurast in Nightmare, so she´s survived two temples. I lowered the players setting to 3 at the start of these areas.

I take very long breaks between her playing session, because she is, frankly, quite boring to play. The going is very slow and I need to repair the spear like 15 times per area. :p
It´s only the combo of the very sturdy Decoy and Pala´s long attack range that allows her to still make progress. Now if she could only craft a better Yari...(Sol runes are desperatley needed).

I see that I haven´t even added Pala to the table. I´ll do that when I get home.

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

Woo hoo! Altjira finally made it to rescue Anya. That took a great deal of care and many forays. The mix of monsters in the Frozen River was crucial, as it was in the Cystalline Passage to get there also. Several times after picking my way carefully through to get to the Frozen River, the monster mix there was just not feeasible safely. And several times, with a do-able mix, a boss with bad mods forced a retreat and reroll. The winning combination for turned out to be Rot Walkers, Bone Mages and vipers. The ghosts there were OK with his Sanctuary caduceus on switch, but I got an EF/LE one very far in on an earlier effort that forced a retreat. Some of those efforts were hard-fought battles just to find that I'd gone the wrong way- I am usually pretty good at recognizing which way Frozenstein is but this time I ended up eventually opening up almost the whole map, spread across many play sessions. Altjira levelled most of the way from 85 to 86 (still a little ways to go to 86) just on those Frozen River and Crystalline Passage efforts.

He did have a couple of NDEs in there, usually unleechables with nearby cold-damaging ranged attackers or bad overlapping boss pack combos. He's pretty dependent upon leech for life.

Now that he's got slighlty better resists from the scroll reward, I'll rearrange gear for further progress. And I'll write up his current data below in case he dies along the path ahead. Even with that incredible axe, he is somewhat underpowered and takes a lot of care. It was at least 3 hours on that last run to get to and kill Frozenstein.

I did socket his wonderful crafted war spike with a shael which I think now brings it to 4FPA zeal under his Fanaticism. Here's his current data and gear:

crafted blood helm, 3%LL 10% DS +6 en +15 life 8%LR and two open sockets!
crafted warspike from earlier: +342%ED, now 20%IAS (shael), +9 max +19 life 17 AR
earlier reward aerin sheild: +2 pally, +46-ish resists including PDiamond socket
crafted field plate 29% FHR, ctc FN, 7 STR, 24LR
crafted amulet: +1 zon, +9% blocking, +4 max, 17-32 resists
crafted rings: a fantastic 11/40/40/11 resist 3%LL 5STR crafted one, and 2%LL 13dex 11life 62mana 11life one
crafted gloves: 20%IAS, 3%LL, 7%CB, life, FR
crafted belt: 2%LL, 5%OW, 10 life, 5 mana, LR 30
crafted boots: 30%FRW, 3%LL, 13 life, +6 replenish, mana, 26 CR 15 FR

switch caduceus: +2 pally +1 salvation +2 sanctuary (!) +2 zeal 127%ED ctc FN repair
switch shield: +1 pally barbed shield

after gear:
133 STR
170 DEX
250 VIT
21 E 5 unallocated
level 85
life 1102
zeal AR 4267 without fanat, 5729 with
LCS damage: 1425-2473 with Fanat and axe, 618-820 caduceus and Sanctuary

Repairs are about 30k for the axe. Fortunately the caduceus has self repair, otherwise with those staffmods I think I would feel like that pally in the old cow video, constantly begging for money from the necro.

Resists are 75/75/75/49 before potions, 50/50/68/3 switch before potions.

Skills with gear:
22 zeal 22 sac 22 fanat 12 HF 3HS, 17 unallocated, should go into BA for the AR I think.

@purplelocust: I love that War Spike! Pala´s dream is those stats for a Ghost Spear or Matriarchal Spear.

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

Impalazons do take a ridiculous amount of patience. I started one in an earlier tourney and never got far- I was proud of not falling over laughing at the noise though! I had been wondering if I'd ever used the skill and as soon as I heard it, I knew that I hadn't since I would have remembered that sound surely.

Good luck crafting! Being able to do runs is a big help for me for amassing ingredients and non-shoppable bases, though. And in your case, I think you'd also be grateful if self-repair came up!

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

Not much progress with Altjira. I did put points into BA for the AR bonus, hoping that would improve things quite a lot. The change is noticeable but not dramatic. So he hasn't faced the Ancients yet.

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

OK, some progress with Altjira- he defeated the Ancients and is at the WSK WP! I switched around gear somewhat after the Anya resist reward and that gave a few more choices. He's somewhat less delicate now but still takes a great deal of care. He's happy as long as there are no ranged monsters around, as long as everything in sight is leechable with some flesh on its bones, and there aren't any cold-damaging monsters nearby. In other words, he's rarely happy...

I did a pretty thorough preparation for the Ancients, with mana and health potions strewn around. I did the full potion prebuff but I didn't bother with a shrine prebuff, as that always seems to be a way of making sure at least one of them is cursed. And the mix of mods wasn't bad at all- it still took a while (several Holy Shields ran out) but he wasn't in grave danger at any point. In fact, going through the WSK was worse as there were unleechables and ranged monsters so it was a great relief to make it to the WP.

Have you found the exit yet?

Yeah, one the biggest problems in this tourney for fighter-type characters is the lack of CBF.*
(*OK, there is one way to get it, but that is almost impossibly unlikely...)

Good luck in the final areas. Throne Room stairs trap is potentially the greatest danger, I think.

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

I did find the stairs down but that will come another day. The monster types and combinations will be crucial, and I'm not going to be shy about rerolling monsters as this is pretty delicate. That stair trap is a big concern, indeed, but it if is terrible I will run away and try with a different roll assuming I can get back up those stairs.

And indeed, no CBF is a big problem. Thawing potions do almost nothing, as generally shortly whatever chilling effect is quickly reapplied. But I do drink them nevertheless, mainly to get the 85 max cold resists.

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

Whew, Altijira is now a Guardian!

I was anticipating some difficulty with the WSK and Throne and thought it may take several efforts, but the monster mixes were reasonable and so steady progress was made. WSK2 was beetles, fetishes and serpents, and the main danger there was getting too many monsters around but that went OK. The bone spears from the serpents were a concern, and there were a couple of tricky packs, but it was manageable. So then down to WSK3, which were sprites, lightning mages and blood bosses (with their exploders.) That also was feasible but it took exploring the whole map carefully before getting the stairs down.

I was worried about the Throne steps even before jiansonz' warning, but I was fortunate on that front. The Throne was a triple Lord threat: Death Lords (not the PI kind), Pit Lords and Blood Lords. And the area near the stairs was clear and with some careful tiptoeing around (particularly before I knew all three monsters there) it was soon cleared for potential wide-ranging battles with the minion waves. There were surprisingly few boss packs of any type on the level.

The basic plan for the waves was to do as much luring and separating as possible, as usual. I made sure to repair (not cheap with that axe, but worth every GP...) before each wave. The second wave took a long time as the unravellers like standing instead of following, and the cold damage from the mages made things tense. And that poison just plain hurts alot. Waves three and four were comparatively lurable and separable, so that was OK. And Lister did not have any terrible mods, so with some care and luring those were spread out and finished off. It was about an hour all told for the Throne level and all the waves.

Baal himself took a while- he was out in the more open area mainly, which meant some tentacle annoyances. I did have to return to town for repairs (twice) and potion resupply but the lowest his health fell during the battle was a little less than half, just using red potions there.

So plans now are to face Nihilathak and then finish up earlier rewards....

Nice work and congratulations!

A very tough tournament for sure. Good luck on your final quests.

Nihilathak took several forays to get down, and after one particularly tedious one, there were vipers down there so he did the sensible thing and tried again. But finally he did kill Nihilathak, which finished off his Hell quests. There are three imbues left, and I'll see if there are any other stray quests from NM or Normal missing.

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

I'll work on writing up a Guardian thread for Altjira- he has now completed all the old quests (excepting imbues) so I figure his score as:

76 Norm, NM and Hell quests * 2 + 117 WP + - 86 levels + 3 equipped personalized items *10 + 100 NM + 200 H = 599 points.

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

Redescovering my love for symphonic metal (seriously, what an explosion of good bands there has been in the last decade!), I found something I could do to make my Impalazon more bearable to play. :)
Progress has been good since then, and Pala now stands in NM Harrogath.

No gear changes, but Pala has found a Sol rune, so another weapon craft is coming up. Not right now, though, since my chances of getting something good goes up dramatically in a few levels. I´ve even found a magical Hyperion Javelin I could craft to get a better LB weapon. But it´s only ilvl 58, so if I craft it now I will get an affix level of 27 (or something like that. Had to make the calculations by hand since the german affix calculator does not seem to work anymore. Anyone have a link to a working affix calculator?).

The four remaining temples were kind to me, with no boss stairs traps.

Gee, look at the irony. Would have been a decent weapon if I was allowed to use it.

I dreaded Mephisto, so I lowered the players setting to 1 before entering the main chamber. My main way of fighting act bosses in NM has been to use Jab with my javelin/shield setup, and let the small percentages of CB and OW from my Blood items do most of the work. That worked out very well against Mephisto, and I could almost laugh at him when he was totally fooled by the Decoy. Hadn´t expected that.

To give you an idea of how slow my progression is, I present this screenie. You can see the progress I have made along the perimeter of the Steppes. While playing here, I was listening to Epica´s album 'Consign to Oblivion', and this is how far I made it before that album was fully played. 53 minutes. Also, my monster draw was favourable. OK, Venom Lords do have a ton of life and are poison immune. That means my 10% OW needs to trigger in order to stop regeneration. I can (slowly) lower their life without OW help, but then I need so many hits that OW eventually always triggers before the beast is killed. But Venom Lords are not dangerous and I do not need to use any special tactics other than Decoy casting. The other two monster types here were the wimpiest and most easily killed that can spawn here: Cliff Lurkers and Doom Casters.

Now imagine fighting spawners on both the Plains and in the City. Ugh.

Hephasto was very nasty: Holy Freeze Extra Strong. Pala absolutely HATES Holy Freeze! The Decoy could not take many hits from this brute, and after two NDEs, Pala had enough. I led the Heffer down to here. I was ready for a gazillion town trips to fix the javelins, but then I discovered that I could reach Hephasto with my spear. I had to wait until he was at the closest, then tie him up there with a well-placed Decoy. Now I had a short window I could poke him. I used Jab, as you can see.

Nice to not needing to worry about IM!

The tactic I used against Mephisto worked really well for Diablo, too. Minus the Decoy help, because Pala wanted to stay at range 1 from D, as that fully protects you from the Lightning Inferno.

My nice armor will certainly get a socket since it´s endgame material. I would really like to put a Jewel of Fervor there (not that I have any...) but I think I will need Ral + Ort in armor/helm if I make it to Hell.
