    Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

    The Craftsman's Children
Inspired by the Gold Diggers, Yellow Bellies, and Green with Envy, here is a challenging item-restriction tournament based around crafting. If you've ever wanted crafted items to have their day, then this is the tournament for you!

They proceeded to the great hall, drawn by scents of exotic meat and fruits. Covered with towers of succulent delicacies and smoked perfection, the stout old table did not disappoint. Each man and woman heartily dug into the bounty before them, until full and serene. Laughter exchanged and goblets drained, the revelers grew quiet. Their patriarch rose and spoke.
"Children," bellowed the white-haired mountain, "we are at a time of great importance. I am not long for this world, and our clan is not prepared for the inevitable.

"We have been blessed by the gods with great prosperity. They gave me keen eyes & strong arms to produce the finest weapons and armor on Sanctuary. And it has brought us fame and fortune; allowing many of you the chance to study with the great warriors of our time, from the barbarian guardians of Mount Arreat to the pale priests of Rathma.

"Yet our work is in peril. There are many fine craftsmen and artisan women among you, but none have left my shadow. To succeed with your wares you must be known and respected for great deeds. Go forth into the world, my children: Wear your strongest creations in battle and prove their mettle in these dark times. Discard your bodyguards and fineries to embrace the axe, rod, and spear. Kill by your own hands and all lands will be yours. I will await your return, bestowing leadership of this family upon the greatest and most accomplished among you!"

One by one the children paid their respects and exited the gathering, each with a plan to excel in combat...

    Items
-Due to the components required for crafted items, our item restrictions do not become active until Act 2 Nightmare.
-You may use any gear up to Act 1 NM. When you enter Act 2 NM, all worn gear must be crafted (including weapon switch if used). From that time on, your character can only wear crafted items.
-Only "orange" crafted items count (Arreat: http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/crafteditems.shtml or PDF: http://www.pdfgameinfo.com/subpages/diablo2/D2Info_DL.htm)
-Quest rewards (rare items) from Charsi, Cain, Ormus, and Anya may be used in place of crafted items, as they are trophies to your valor. As testaments to a particular point in time, these items cannot be upgraded to better base types or re-rolled via the cube.
-Sockets can be filled with runes, gems, or jewels.
    -All charms are acceptable.
-You may only equip quest items for the relevant part of that quest (i.e. equipping Khalim's flail to break the compelling orb).

    Mechanics
-Characters may be hardcore or softcore, but retirement is mandatory at first death.
-You may enter another character after any deaths.
-Clear each area as many times as you want; backtracking to old difficulties and zones is fine. How else will you get those NM countess crafting runes and Act 1 gem shrines?
    -All characters must be untwinked.
-Any "/players X" value can be used at any time.
    -RRM/RWM are fine, if useless.
-ATMA/GoMule may be used as an expanded stash.
-No mercenaries! We must prove our individual worth to become champions.
-Waypoints and quests are optional but good points.
    -There are no respecialization restrictions.
-Quest rewards may be saved for use later (i.e. socket/imbue).
-Patch 1.13C only for a level playing field.
-This tournament will end when a month has elapsed between updates.

    Skills
To showcase our crafted creations, we must stick to weapon-centric skills.
-No casted attacks are allowed, unless otherwise specified. Casted attacks are defined as spells that deal damage independent of striking with a weapon. (Examples: Fireball, Bone Spear)
-No skills that trigger casts when striking. (Examples: Lightning Strike, Freezing Arrow, Phoenix Strike and pre-reqs) This does not apply to "% chance to cast xxxx" on gear.
-Skills that add straight elemental damage or %eledamage to your attacks are fine (e.g. Vengeance, Dragon Tail, Enchant)
-For example, Power Strike is fine because it adds lightning damage to your attacks. Charged Strike is out because you basically cast charged bolt with it when attacking. If you're confused, just ask!
-Utility spells – casted skills that serve a utility purpose without doing appreciable damage – are allowed. (Examples: Telekinesis, Mind Blast, Ravens). Rule of thumb: if you're doing noticeable damage or killing enemies with a spell, it's probably not a utility skill. To compensate for the lack of viable Necromancer and Sorceress melee/throwing attacks, these classes can treat corpse explosion and static field as utility skills.
-Skill points may be put in restricted skills for synergy purposes.
-One damage-dealing summoned pet may be used at a time. A necromancer may have either a golem or a skeleton, but not both. A druid with a grizzly out may summon oak sage and carrion vine, as the latter are non-damage pets. If he wants to use poison creeper he must dismiss the grizzly first.

    Scoring
    +1 point per waypoint
    +2 points per quest completed
+10 points for each piece of personalized gear equipped.
    +100/200 for completing nightmare/hell
    -1 point per character level

Please update the tables for each post and include a one-line summary of your progress (your crafting total is just for fun):

Certainly sounds interesting, now I will have 2 projects to work on :)

I was considering this idea for a tournament as well, not that I would have wanted to host it anyway, should be fun. I will certainly be entering, just have to decide on a build...

by personalized gear equiped do you mean anya personalized?

    kestegs - Yes Anya personalized; you're a glory-hound after all! :D

My character will be Furby the Fury Wolf. I've never gotten very far with a wolf, and this guy should be oodles of fun! Current plans are to stick to fury with a chance-to-cast amp damage weapon on switch (better pray to the crafted gods, eh?).

The Den of evil proved no match for Furby and his club, as this canine adventurer slowly but surely knocked everything over in /p8. Amusingly, he couldn't summon a spirit wolf at level 6, as there appears to be no way to unsummon vines. Since two damaging pets isn't kosher, he'll have to wait until the next session to unleash some wolf-with-wolf action!

I look forward to seeing how many sweet orange items we can stuff in this thread: http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=624211

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

I love crafted items, but one minor suggestion to get around the difficulty of acquiring the ingredients needed in the early going would be to use only cube transmuted items prior to that stage. Just seems strange that over one third of the tourney would simply be single pass untwinked play.

Brak, my idea was to get players into early NM (and crafting) as soon as possible, but it's certainly worth extra style points to rock some cube items in normal. :)

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

Been thinking about something like this, myself. I like the rules. The no-merc bit is tough, but I like it since the only merc type that can wield crafted weapons is the most-used type anyway.

If there is good participation after I´ve finished my two Gold Diggers characters, I will probably enter (seems like a good time to upgrade to v1.13 anyway). Either with an Avenger, a Berserker or a Melee/Golemancer.
Single-pass, though. I think it´s more interesting if the number of crafting attempts are limited.

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

I cannot enter this tourney, but I do have an untwinked, single-pass crafted-only character that I am playing at the moment, an assassin currently in Act 4 NM. I have allowed myself to make use of the Charsi imbue rewards and also a merc who uses only crafted gear. Really looking forward to following this tourney as it may give me ideas for my character.

Oh yeah, the reason I posted. At Players 8 in Normal/Players 5 in NM, I have had more than enough ingredients to craft items several times over. The only chokepoint is Pgems, to be honest, plenty of jewels and runes have dropped.

I feel the lack of a merc will really increase the difficulty of this challenge, so good luck to all.

sounds fun! I think I might want in. I started a gold diggers sorc but I think I might split my time between gold and crafted items.
Only thing I have to figure out is what kind of char I'm going to make. I've never been a big crafter so I'm actually getting a little excited about jumping into something new.

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

I think Im going to join this tourney. Im going to play a Meele/Bowmancer using a Golems as tank. White/socketed and Cubed items only (ie only items that have been modified by using the cube) until I can start craft, the only areas I will rerun is Countess for crafting runes, LK chests+racks for gems and items and Pits for items to be crafted. GL to everyone in this tourney

I should probably have checked which items could be crafted first . Ill probably imbue and hope for good mods, or craft some javelins then.
    And a update:

Using Amp and a Hand Axe while clearing Blood Moor and the Den, Craftsman gained levels fast despite the slow killing. lvl 6 was reached about 3/4th of the Den and Clay Golem quickly became a very good tank. There was nothing that remotely threaten him and after a few points he began to get pretty good at doing damage.

Cold Plains went by uneventfully, as did The Cave(although I did meet two packs of Cold-enchanted archers who took a loooong time to kill), Blood Raven, Stony Fields, Underground Passage and Tristram. As the killing became slower and slower, I longed for the Countess and her runes which would be very welcome in all of the sockets I had. When I reached her, I was rewarded with a Ral and a Flawed Sapphire. The Ral was pretty much what I had hoped for and it went straight into my 3os Hunters Bow, which I will use against Andy. 2xRals and a Eth will be good I think. Now to farm her for runes.

That's a really cool build, nemty. I kind of wish I thought of it...couldn't get a necro build working in my head. Does anyone know if the blood recipe works on throwing axes?

I've made some progress on my wolf and will update when there's time...

So im entering with a barb. Goes by the name of Armsman. Probably going to be a conc barb. He's about level 16 in act1.
I'm going to play some more and then come back with a proper update. I'm going to see if I can at least craft some blood gloves and a belt or something before heading to NM.

    What about respecs?

Also is it possible to up crafted items? I don't think so, but just checking.

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

I was mainly thinking of putting points in CG at first and when I start getting some failed blood weapons respec to Iron Golem. Leftover points from Golem synergies and curses goes into Bone Armor synergies for extra survivability. And throwing axes are specified as throwing weapons so I dont think so.

Last time I checked you cant up crafted items.

Andariel has fallen. With a 2xTal'd Skull Cap and a 3xRal'd Hunters Bow, she quickly fell without doing any real damage. I had to resummon my Golem a couple of times though. Her drops werent spectacular, but gems are gems.

On to Act 2: Sewers was easy but slow (like everything else) except for the archers and melee skellies who were resistant to fire. Confuse was used to great effect against them though, and Radament was also easily disposed of by dropping to p1 and killing him while his minions were confused.

Rocky Wastes and Stony Tombs were np, and with this Dry Hills map, I quickly reached my goal: the Cube.

My first cubing was the 3 chipped+magic weapon=>socketed weapon and this was the result. Cant say Im disappointed, although 2 socks would be nicer. Some Countess runs later and a Ort was added. After cubing some amulets and rings and buying armor in Lut Gholein, Im all set for Maggot Lair :yuck:

I think I'm going to enter with a Paladin, OrangeAvenger. This should give me a chance to try a build I've been wanting to do for a while, pretty much load up on elemental damage and zeal+conviction. Probably going to max holy fire and respec along the way.

Just to make sure, I can Anya a 6socket phase blade, stuff it with elemental damage jewel/runes and use that as my weapon, right?

Ok, can you explain this rule to me then, I'm not understanding it.
"-Quest rewards from Charsi, Cain, Ormus, and Anya may be used in place of crafted items, as they are trophies to your valor. As testaments to a particular point in time, these items cannot be upgraded to better base types or re-rolled via the cube."

Re: Tournament - The Craftsman's Children

When Charsi gives you the "imbue" quest and you imbue an item, you can use that even thought it is rare rather than crafted (yellow rather than orange). There are certain ways to change that item, though. For example, you could put a certain rune and gem in the cube in order to upgrade it to a better base time (normal > exceptional > elite). You could also put six skulls in the cube in order to re-roll its stats (aka, get a new item of the same base type). All of these methods of changing the item you "imbued" are disallowed. The same is true of the other quest rewards.
