#1 A&E (Maps Remix), by Goldfrapp (album:
A&E)
My first experience of this song was actually the
Maps Instrumental Remix, which got me totally hooked on the beat that builds up throughout the song. Then I heard the full remix version and was blown away. Alison Goldfrapp's voice is so good, and layered into the instrument tracks...wow.
Album of the year
Runners up:
Snow Patrol - A Hundred Million Suns
Had it been released earlier, this might have taken the top spot. In the 2 months I've had it, it has launched Snow Patrol to the top of my frequent listens. Got my girlfriend and my sister hooked on it as well. I feel like Snow Patrol has moved in the opposite direction I was expecting them to go in the wake of their popularity, and that's a very good thing. Don't get me wrong,
Run is a great song, but if they had tried to duplicate that success into a whole new album, it would've bombed.
Zox - Line In The Sand
This one came out of absolutely nowhere. Zox is a local Providence band I was introduced to while at RISD through a friend of one of the members. They put on a good live show, and I saw them twice while at RISD. When the new album came out I stumbled across it by accident and gave it a download. Maybe I wasn't listening hard enough at their live shows, because this effort had so much more amazingness packed into it than I ever would have expected.
And the best album released in 2008...
Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
Everything about this album makes me want to move around. This year my taste for electronic music skyrocketed, and this album was definitely one of the primary reasons. It's nonstop fun from track 1 to track 15. A huge leap forward from their 2004 album.
