This is no particular order off the top of my head, because I don't feel like expending the mental energy to rank them. At first I had more a list of my recent favorite games, but then I put some more thought into it.
  1. Mario Kart (pretty much any version)
  2. Diablo 2
  3. X-Com (probably go with current Xcom 2, but it's hard not to go with original)
  4. Halo (played 'em all, but the original holds a special place)
  5. Sim City (take your pick)
  6. Fallout (can't decide between 2 or 3 and never played much after 3)
  7. Super Smash Bros 64
  8. Age of Empires 2
  9. Super Mario 3
  10. Deux Ex (original - the new one with Adam Jensen was pretty good though)
I do think Mario Kart is the best game ever made - anyone can play it, the game is couch co-op/multiplayer, and it is a ton of fun. To me it embodies the social aspects of what a great game should be.

In no particular order:

  • Diablo 2
  • Doom (the original)
  • Unreal Tournament 1999
  • Half Life 1
  • Half Life 2
  • Mark of the Ninja
  • Portal 1 and 2
  • Grim Dawn
  • Counter Strike Global Offense
  • Lode Runner (the original, yeah, I'm old)

Off the top of my head, so I might be forgetting something and edit my post later.

In no particular order:
  1. Diablo II
  2. Age of Empires II & Conquerors Expansion

  4. Command & Conquer Series
  5. Red Alert Series
  6. Dune II
  7. Monkey Island Series
  8. Broken Sword Series
  9. Doom
  10. Star Wars: Jedi Knight Series

OK, so a lot of them are series rather than standalone games, but I couldn't pick!

This thread is bringing back so many memories. And games I forgot in my list: original Prince of Persia (PC) was stunning for the time. Commandos 1, Monkey Island 1, Lemmings, ...

Diabloii.Net Member
1) Diablo 2
2) Civ 3 (includes Conquests)
3) Fallout 4
4) Fallout 1
5) Baldur’s Gate
6) Earl Weaver Baseball II
7) Dr. Mario
8) Dragon Warrior
9) Legend of Zelda
10) Techmo Super Bowl

Edit: I had to add an honorable mention... back in my Intellivision days I used to play a AD&D Treasure of Tarmin (aka Minotaur). I actually have an Intellivision emulator on my phone and the ROM for this game... and yes, I still play it on occasion.

Each one of these has its own story in my life...

I'm sure that there are better games than what appear in my list, but these are the games that have meant the most to me over the years.

Games that have taken much of my time during the years:

1) Civilization I (I still play this on occasion)
2) Civilization III
3) Diablo II
4) Heroes of Might and Magic II (still play this as well :D)
5) IO (c64)
6) Monkey Island II
7) Shandalar (and this...:D)
8) Worms
9) Guitar Hero
10) Phantom of the Asteroid (c64) <= Spent an entire summer holiday making a map for this with a friend. Amazingly large for c64 - 20 kb tileset (256 tiles of 10x8 characters) and 8 kb map (64x128 tiles) which equals a 5120x8192 pixels in size map. Later on I made c64 code for traversing the map, .net code for screen grabbing and auto determining the map location, portals timing etc., which made it possible (though extremely tough) to actually complete the game without cheating. Back in the c64 days we completed the game by saving states with a cartridge onto a tape for every uranium cube grabbed - still took about 7 weeks of 10-12 hour days to complete the game. And one man wrote the whole damn thing - one of the most impressive feats of the c64 era imo (and it was released on a Mastertronic label and he probably made like $1000 on the thing).

Games that I've enjoyed a lot in the past, and go back to now and then. I honestly can't order them, except for number 1:

1. Starcraft/Brood Wars - If still had the number of games/players it used to, I would still be playing it today.

No particular order:
- Diablo 2/LoD
- Civilization II (Only Civ game for me.)
- Baldur's Gate/BG2, expansions & mods
- Legend of Zelda (NES)
- Super Mario Bros 3 (NES)
- Unreal

@Corrupted - You reminded me of a great game: Settlers 2. I bought the GoG version ages ago, and have completed it. I did have to speed up time, but most missions come down to expansion, resource management for elite soldiers, and catapulting their Fortresses and everything until their resources deplete. Good game, but had to use the speed-up cheat, otherwise it would take a day for a single mission.

Honorable mentions (enjoyable, but I probably wouldn't put them on a list)
Elite + (Dos), Diablo 1, Warcraft 1/Warcraft 2, Unreal Tournament, Worms, Commandos, Half-life 1, Ecco the Dolphin.

Hehe. Some think classic > lod.

This list is in order, based on how much of my life they consumed:
1 Diablo 2
2 Diablo 1 PlayStation version
3 Mario Kart 64
4 Mario games on the NES-N64
5 Pokemon Puzzle League
6 Lode Runner 3D
7 Yoshi's Island
8 Streets of rage Sega Genesis
9 Yu-Gi-Oh duel master GBA
10 Call of duty 4

That list is only time consumed however. In terms of the best, I'd say Diablo 1 has a better and darker experience where as d2 just has endless grinding. Lode runner 3d (not the crappy 2d 1980s) was amazing. People often ask what my brain looks like. I tell them to play that game ;)

Interesting :). Like I said, I really liked the original from the 80's, but then again I'm old. Actually not that old, but still, trying to explain why I like it. Anyway, good to know about the 3D version. Looking at this list of Lode Runner versions, I see Lode Runner 3D as a game on nintendo 64. Is that the one? Or is Lode Runner 2, which is for pc?

Edit: I agree with you about D1 having superior athmosphere to D2. Superior to about any game actually afaik. Up there with the original Doom and Alone in the Dark for me.

I liked Friiser's list with Tecmo Bowl and Dr Mario and Civ III. My list below (in no order):

1. Diablo 2
2. Bard's Tale Trilogy
3. M.U.L.E.
4. Civ III
5. Panzer General
6. Warcraft 2
7. Wasteland
8. Wolfenstein 3D
9. Unreal Tournament
10. Age of Empires 2

If I were told that I could only have ten games for the rest of my life, I would be completely satisfied with this list (If "they" let me have the complete BT trilogy on C64 and count it as one game. And yes, I still have a working C64!).

I can't even imagine how many hours I've spent on these games.

3. Goldeneye
4. Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne
5. Rollercoaster Tycoon 2
6. Sim City 2000
7. Command & Conquer: Red Alert
8. Theme Park
9. Gran Turismo 2
10. Hearthstone
