Throwadin : joke or viable build?

Hi all!
Is the throwadin a pure newb fiction, totally useless and ineffective past normal difficulty... or a true viable build ?
(I mean mainly paladin with throwing javalins + aura + shield ... I guess)

And if it is viable:
- is it hightly item dependant ?
- hard to play ?
- viable but VERY hard to play in hell ?
- how to build one ? stats? skills? strategy?
