Thresh Socket Runs

READ FIRST! : This mini MF guide mainly applies to Singleplayer because in SP you can generate great map layout and it stays the same after each restart unlike in Multiplayer. It might be good to try running Thresh in MP too, just expect much longer run times because of bad Arreat Plateau/Crystalline Passage waypoint position most of the time.

Hi everybody, I decided to do Thresh Socket Runs (mainly because I want to find Astreons and Steelrends for my Zealot + I´m happy to see any very rare item) and I thought I could inform you guys about how good/bad my results are.

Thresh Socket is a super unique boss found on Arreat Plateau in 5. Act standing in front of the entrance to Crystalline Passage. He is always Cursed and Cold Immune.

Few important advices:

1/ Do not underestimate him! While he´s not as dangerous as Pindleskin (Pindle is ALWAYS Fire Enchanted and has minions), he is always Cursed and when it is combined with Extra Strong he can one-hit-kill even a character with more than 1000life!
2/ It is not necessary to have huge MF. 200-250 MF is enough. Do not sacrifice gear which helps you survive/kill him faster for more MF.
3/ Generate a good map! Mine was done in few minutes and I have Arreat Plateau waypoint right under Thresh. My usual run time with Zealot without teleport is around 20 seconds (from the moment I appear in the game to the moment I click on Save&Exit)
4/ /players1 settings is enough. More /players will NOT make Thresh drop more items.

Which builds do well against him ?: (..under construction..)
Notes: Melee (cause Nihl is FE, has charging minions and is slower without tele) - but lots of life and some DR needed (also Slow target is great - merc with Reapers is great choice), he is never LI and PI together so builds that do both Light. and Phys. dmg, Cold dmg builds are not good cause he is Cold immune, Barbs are great cause he will almost never shatter in ice so they can use Find Item skill quite often..

Ok and now to my first recorded results:
(I am running Thresh with my lvl95 Zealot (no teleport) with 230% MF and act 2 holy freeze merc with Reapers Toll weapon)

First day - 300 runs:

Honestly, talking about SP, if you're going to roll a map for convenience, I'd rather spend my time rolling a really good Durance 2 and run Meph instead. Threshy might drop a few more upper-end items, but Meph will drop better in the long-term. Since you're not concerned with tbans, you can run Pindle+Eldritch ad nauseum for the TC87 pieces, and they're always right at the WP.

That being said, if you already have him, he's basically another Eldritch you can hit, albeit without the minions that can also drop TC87

I've always thought about running thresh for a bit of a change-up. When you write a mini-guide, it's a good idea to point out that rolling maps only applies to SP since it may confuse new bnet players.

Otherwise, it seems this is a nice mini-guide. If you want to expand on it, a short treatment of what builds would do well against him might be nice.

droid: Yeah Meph will definitely give you more unique/set items in the long run but I think many people are tired of running him or want to find items that he cannot drop. When you have most items from Meph I just think it's a good idea to try running Thresh.

SnickerSnack: Thanks for the point with rolling maps. I wrote this topic in hurry and I know it is not looking great but I will try to make it look better when I have time. Also good point with the builds that will do well against Thresh..will think about it later.

When I reach like 3000 runs I will make some sort of summary so that people can see how lucky/unlucky few thousands Thresh runs can be.

It's fine if you post your reports, but they won't have any value to others. There are drop calculators for that.

@droid:
Rolling a good Tresh map is really really easy, and after a couple of thousand runs Meph really stops being a good target to run. I'd simply do Pindle runs, but change can be good.

Yeah I know about drop calcs of course. But I am a bit bored and I also think that numbers and percentages do not always convince people..it is just nice to see that someone can actually drop something (before I started counting my Thresh runs he dropped me perfect Bul Kathos ring)

I voted for second option as I used to run him along with most superuniques (when I had a teleporter), and I believe he can drop some very high items, didn't know what he couldn't drop, thanks for the list.
I don't do as many runs since I don't have the patience nor I play SP. gz on the horizons and armors.

All right so after a short break I did some runs to complete my next (350 runs this time) report. So here are the results:

Yes, I think it was successful hunt so far In cca 2300 runs (which is less than 24 hours of playing in case of Thresh) I found some very nice items. And with higher MF results could have been even better I believe. Regarding the rune drops, well, Thresh is definitely not a good target if you are looking for runes. He drops runes very occasionally and the chance to get some higher rune is not good at all (might be better in 1.13).

So I decided to finish lvl 96 so I could take more MF gear on my zealot and not be afraid to die and lose experiences. Now when it's done (I'm lvl 96 finally), I have MF 473% and here's my first report with this new MF gear:

300 runs:

Unique items (only exceptional and elite):

The Oculus
Shadow Dancer

Heaven's Light

Set items (only the "better" ones):


IK helm
IK maul 2x


So you can see not many items dropped but I think that finding Shadow Dancers and almost perfect Heaven's Light in about 3 hours of playing isn't complete fail.

The first time I ran Thresh he spawned with might aura, extra strong and of course he amp'd my merc and I right away. My merc died an ugly horrible death and I tele'd for the WP. lol
