Those who played Hellfire before.

Re: Those who played Hellfire before.

I think WoW is enough for an epic world.

Diablo world should be dark and gloomy, since it doesn't have much of a story behind it. Warcraft can be epic, yes, with the detailed world and history.

First Diablo game has been made with next to none storyline - just a "go down the labirynth to kill a final boss" type of game; they tried to change it by installing a world in D2, and in D3, Blizz is actually trying to give us a warcraft-like world with lore, continents, various cities and such. Well, you obviously can't keep the action in a one small town forever, but..

But snow wastelands and deserts can be scary too. Or maybe not "scary", but "intimidating", or at least - climatic. D2 had very little atmosphere. A great game, but it lost that certain something.

By taking the action back to cathedral, even if just for a brief while - they obviously do an attempt of reinstalling the old atmosphere.

Say what you want but killing zombies on moors - in broad daylight - just CAN'T be compared to killing zombies in dungeons. And the music - Cathedral music was brilliant; act1 d2 music was just good, but nothing epic. D1 music had madness behind it; The music alone was scary.

I really agree with your last point that the D1 music had madness behind it, that's exactly the feeling I get from it. It's really twisted, in a way. *hums tristram theme*

The first Diablo was made with about as much, or much more, story than the first warcraft game. Blizzard is well known for letting the story of their games shape up as more and more games are released.

The Diablo 1 booklet carried quite a lot of background history already, and a fair amount was offered in game through books and dialogues.

However, Diablo is the kind of game where it's optional to delve into the story, it's been like that already since the first game. In warcraft you are more or less forced through a story, as you battle your way through the campaign.

Screams, whispers and those little weird sounds in the background of cathedral theme made the theme scary and hinted madness ;)

Catacomb theme had very cool guitar parts where mystery and darkness were almost touchable.

Caves and hell were also nice, but not as powerful as first two.

I started to think about Lost City in D2 here. The atmosphere really changes when the sun goes dark. The plague bearer turns into zombies intstead of infected dead daywalkers.
