Those who played Hellfire before.

Those who haven't take a look at this video.

The 2 places, Hive and Crypt were pretty awesome IMO.

The way they made the Hive, it looks 20 times scarier than D2's Maggot Lair or Spider Caverns eh :scratchchin:
The monsters, when they die, they REALLY sound like they are dying.
And the monsters there are disgusting lol, but it created that bug-infested atmosphere that D2 can never replace.

The Crypt scares me, even till now.
I still remember I played Hellfire when I was around 10 years old, and all those dying groans and moans and screaming, and that background music...it still kinda creep me out :weep: .
That is what I call a CRYPT! :D

If something even close to this is in D3... AWESOME :jig:

Compared to D2, yes.

Yeah...

D1 to my eye is a bigger success than d2. DiabloII has a lot basic caracteristic missing compared to the first one.

D1 was way more scary.

The only scary thing I see is the inability to get away safely (i.e. you don't run 19x faster than everything in the whole damn world ala D2).
If you're 10y/o Diablo 2 will most likely be scary too. Heck, even Dink Smallwood is (the huge blue bug always scared the living hell out of me). D2 wasn't scary because you weren't 10y/o.

My 6 year old son does not find D2 scary. I do not think he would be scared by D1 either.

For me Diablo does not need to be scary, I could play some first person shooters like DOOM3 for more scary stuff. But there defenetely was an atmospehere in D1 that has never been matched in D2.

I think the adding of horror to a game, is like adding spice to food - it's gives a completely different dimension to the experience.

IMO-Adding a heavy level of horror, and scare to Diablo 3 would be very welcomed.

I think I was like 14/15(?) when I played Diablo 1/Hellfire; sitting alone in a dark room, battling hell's demons..I definitely remember look around an empty room (many times); scared that there was an acid spitter, or some kind of Demon behind me waiting to take me away.

VERY enjoyable. Perhaps some of my fondest memories.

EDIT: Diablo 2 never came close, but that's obvious.

Dude, D1 was such a great game and Ill agree parts of it scared the crap out of me all of those years ago. Im actually going to have dig up the disk again now and reinstall it and rock som massive numbers of Fallen. Thats another thing I miss from D1, the massive amoutns of monsters, even more so then D2. And plus, I mean what ever happened to Wirt.

It sure does speak volumes for how overpowered the Sorcerer was. He was the best tank, healer, AND DPS. The poor Warrior had to chase **** all around the room or use a cheeky Telekill method for those ranged guys whereas the Sorcerer can just spam Chain Lightning, and no worries about being in the middle of all the enemies so long as you have Mana Shield. At least they got the magic to melee balance right in D2. ;)

Diablo 1 is only scary when it´s hard, chainlightning is to IMBA...and some things are just way easier than the original game...Diablo II feels like an epic journey (which it actually is) and it doees´nt need to be all that scary IMO

Re: Those who played Hellfire before.

Maybe I should rephrase the word "scary".

I didn't meant the horror flick type of scariness, but the way the environment and monsters interact to make the player feel uneasy and insecure. As in the video, most of the monsters cry/moan/scream in anguish when they die, and it adds to that "scary" feeling.
D2 was too "safe" I guess, it's just a different type of feel when compared to playing with D1.

Diablo II feels like an epic journey (which it actually is) and it doees´nt need to be all that scary IMO
I agree with this, D2 was more of exploring the world of the Sanctuary.

But the thing is, when I watch the D3 videos, it's a mixture of both D1 gloomliness and D2's epicness, which is good :D

chainlightning is to IMBA
Well it hits almost in all direction and I remember the mana cost was decent, thus making it a favourite, and there are too many IMBA AoE spells in D1 like Apocalypse and Immolation anyway...

Not to mention mana shield was overpowered because all damage will be dealt to mana until it reaches 0.

Re: Those who played Hellfire before.

I played D1 when I was 6, and I wasn't scared, although I didn't really pay attention to its atmosphere. I was more like "OMG DIS IS SO COOL IM WTFPWNIN DUDES LOLOLOL".

I've never played hellfire, however from watching the crypt and cave just seem plain lame. Alot of people think this too. Compared to the original Diablo, it was a really useless add-on.

And yea, D2 was alot less scarier than D1. But like already mentioned, it was more about the epicness. And really, I think no matter how hard they tried, it would be impossible to create a successor as creepy as D1. D1 was the first time we encountered that scariness, but if they tried imitating it, it wouldn't be nearly as dark since we've already had and seen the experience.

Well D3 is. As seen so far, they are making the dungeons with D1's gloomliness and places outside, like the forested waterfall area, with D2's epicness.

Those act3 pits and dungeons and spider cavers are scary imo.. make an untwinked character and go wander around there in Normal difficulty (when your char is quite weak).. put some sounds on and get scared of the things that pop out of the darkness.

We have a fairly active d1/hf forum, you know?

The consensus of most who played a lot of the games is that hellfire was pretty lame. The hive levels especially; cheesy faux-scifi. The crypt was better, but the lack of bosses, shrines, book cases, etc, sapped the fun. They proved useful for mod makers to improve upon, at least.

Re: Those who played Hellfire before.

D1 Cathedral was the absolute best thing any diablo game ever had, the very dark and gloomy catacombs coming second.

I nearly pooped my pants when I saw butcher charging at me with his huge speed, killing me with two-three swings for the first time. Yeah I was like 10yo or so. Same for leoric, he was even faster and more intimidating.

AHh, memories. D3 should be more like D1 when it comes to atmosphere - definitely.

I agree raveharu. I remember playing D1/Hellfire and on occasions finding myself on my own in-game and getting a sudden uneasy feeling and then running back to regroup with friends. The music and sound effects in D1/Hellfire played a huge role in creating that sense of foreboding.

See the bit about 5:49? It was those types of encounters that would make me jump, get a bit sweaty palmed if I was on my own.

I want DIII to be that - I want to feel more comfortable playing with a lamp on so all the room behind me isn't in pitch black. I never got that with DII unforunately.

Re: Those who played Hellfire before.

Actually it depends on the situation, not everything has to be dark and gloomy.
D1 dungeons, in fact were all deep under the ground, except for the cathedral.

It would be preferable for areas like snowy mountainous regions or the hot desert to have D2's epic-ness rather than D1's gloominess.

This is exactly what I thought of when I saw the screenie of the waterfall region that became the attention of a rather ridiculous and silly "petition".
The rainbow was actually an example of the "epic-ness" that Blizzard added into the game, to spice the game up, to make it look more realistic.
