thorns in pvp

can someone explain how thorns works in pvp.
Each source of Return damage is different.
Thorns operates at a 1/10 penalty instead of the usual 1/6.
Spirit of barbs, Iron Maiden, and Iron Golem all have the 1/6 penalty.

But the *returned* damage is based 100% upon the HP you lose when you get hit, not the damage of the attack.

So lets say you and your opponent have 50% DR. You have 1000% Thorns, he has 10000 Smite.

His smite hits you. This should deal him back 1 million, right?
Wrong. First, his smite is reduced by 1/6 for PvP, then 1/2 for your DR.
You lose 834 HP.
Now, you return 1000% of that. He takes an 8340 damage attack.
First it is reduced by 1/10, then 1/2
He loses 417 HP.

Even though you return "1000%" damage, you still take twice as much as him.
So no matter how high you stack your return damage, its still going to suck.

But thats not all!
There is one way to return *massive* amounts of thorns damage; MINIONS
Minions don't take 1/6 damage, nor 1/2 DR, so they take the full 10000 smite, and return ALL of it.

So lets say you have 1000% thorns.
He smites one of your minions for 10000 damage.
The minion takes 10000 damage and dies.
He takes 100000 damage attack, and loses 8334 HP

So basically, if you have iron maiden or thorns on someone, and they melee your minions, they will die in 1 hit

Thats the secret to %return in pvp.

one flaw with the minion dmg return is taht if the dmg returned is still reduced by DR so if the smiter hiting the minnion with the thorns the dmg u listed would be half of what it takes due to DR

I've been using thorns with my WWSin for awhile now (bramble) and I noticed a really interesting glich:

If you block a meele attack with weapon block skill, they take damage back as if YOU had NO DR. Thats right. So you take zero and they take whatever their DR doesn't cover (usually half of what they WOULD have inflicted). Pretty swell when you consider that WB stops almost 60% of their attacks...pretty decent in my book.

I didn't believe this at first, but we tested it extensively and it repeats it self whenever there is a sucessful block. I dont know about using regular shields...I didn't test it.

With just thorns though, Bramble wouldn't be good. But, it has fhr, poison +% damage, decent fire and huge poison resist. I'd say ideal armor for WW sins.

Unless U want to cop out and use nigma like all the other losers. :wink3:
