Old thread here.
Purely annoying technical issues
how did the thread get broken and how can I do it again here?
They can suck it.
The timer on the "report thread" button for these forums.
Otherwise I could compose a "Burma Shave" style message to Dredd...
It's enough to report just one of the ad spammers in a single forum, we will notice all the others as well then.
Oh, yeah, having the word "spoiler" appear in the spoiler tag head
You could bring out the trash after the first report, feed the dog after the second, get another beer after the third and so on.
The mods have most of the fun about it anyway, although it becomes a bit boring to make the same mouse clicks all the time, followed by a bit of of paperwork in the mod forum.
Sounds like someone needs to get a'scripting!
Here's a good YouTube - Condell is a strong atheist who I probably wouldn't find much common ground with otherwise, but he's pitch-perfect with this:
Damn. Um. Damn. I'm speechless. Possibly the finest rant I've seen in years. I actually cannot take issue with anything he has said there.
It looked like an rant of intolerance, it even sounded like one, superficially anyway - but the words ... solid gold.
Much as I want to keep that quality one up, I just found a new & improved thing to snark about.
@ the Pat Condell vid: THAT ought to be in the "Things You Love" thread. Excellent verbal takedown - I agree with every damn word. Thanks for introducing me to this fellow, JM.
A zealous, vigilant community makes mods happy (I suspect that's not your goal though, you spoony bard)!
The "alert" sfx on my laptop is very low-key. If I'm not sitting at my desk, I can't hear it. Occasionally I leave my laptop on my nightstand when I go to bed, but only if I have a clear calendar the next day. Forum responsibilities have to remain a very distant second to real life responsibilities. Once upon a time I did try to "do it all," but that story has a pretty rough ending. :ashamed:
There have been times when I've considered putting in for a co-mod, but there's two problems: 1) I'd need somebody who could cover the hours that I'm inactive, which means I need someone from overseas; 2) if we didn't have a perpetual spambot problem, it would be a waste. Under normal circumstances, I'm happy running OTF solo. Even if the traffic in this section was heavier, I'd still be perfectly content running it myself. For whatever reason, due to the theme of this sub, the personalities that gravitate here and the more volatile topics that come up, it just seems like things run smoother if one person is "in charge".
Now I'm rambling. I hate it when I do that.
Damn it Dredd, I hate when you ramble. Where's a mod when you need one?
I already do enough rambling as it is and am still pretty longwinded (failed to cut down on that this year), so please don't you start aswell!
I'm reading the OTF regularly and zap all ad bots I see, I even merge them into an invisible sticky, so I have something else than deleted threads on page 1 (which still appear for mods). I just won't interfere in arguments between forum members, although I'm sometimes very tempted to do so. In urgent cases, I still act to some extent if it happens when everybody knows that I'm watching. That must be enough .
in the past I've volunteered for bot zapping duty just cuz I was always here, but now I'm never here, I blame everyone for not being entertaining enough
I must be reading the wrong threads because I have no idea what you're talking about. Tell you what though - if you ever feel a ramble coming on, you can always come bug me. We can ramble at each other and spare the others. :badteeth:
Thanks to you I still have a full head of hair and most of my marbles.
If you're still interested, I'd be more than happy to add your name to the pool. We're not really looking to bring in new mods at the moment, but we inevitably need new blood from time to time. It's nice to have a list of potential volunteers - makes things easier.
Thing is, I certainly don't "Love" Condell or Joe Lieberman, just as I didn't "Love" Hitchens. They're people who I am ethically opposed to who I have (the utmost?) admiration for - unlike Dawkins, who I consider a self-promoting prat.
I'm only thinking of you.
Did it at least feel a small bit good that you have been asked?
If it didn't:
Maybe Dredd just asked because he knew that you will say no.
It's always nice to know you're wanted, even if it is just by a bunch of middle aged balding guys on the internet.
