    The second-oldest profession.

You hear all the time about how prostitution is the oldest profession. What exactly is the reasoning behind this? It sounds reasonable enough, but I'm curious. And what's the second oldest profession? Any ideas?

Second oldest profession is politician. There's little difference. Only that a whore is more honorable

    Stonecrafter beat all those.

    Grounds:

    * she was the first person to have profession that could not help her sustain herself as is - she's producing goods to sell others; this beats hunter, who gets nutrition from his work

    * she has to work in it full-time; this separates her from the collector, who can do other stuff in the meanwhile

    * she has to spend time in learning the skills for the trade and passing them on to form a group of tradesmen; this separate her from the whore, to whom the skills of trade come naturally and fairly rarely are passed on

This is something that paleontologists are pretty sure of. They tend to scoff at the "world's oldest". And for a good reason.

This seems to be a highly specialized definition of profession. I don't think that passing on skills is necessary for something to be a profession. By your definition, prositution isn't a job in the current world. I think that nearly everyone would beg to differ on that point.

They scoff at prostitution being the oldest profession because their definition of profession excludes it by default. I think this says more about paleontologists than it does about the history of professions.

Oftentimes it is not. Is slave a job? Because the unfortunate who have their lot to be in the modern human trade are no more than that. On the other hand, I am not talking about job. I am talking about profession. The fine line, even though we're delving into semantics, is dissected below.

Admittedly, OED says "professional -- adj. 3 engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation".

On the other hand, there is the implied need for the skills of the trade: "profession n. 1 a vocation or calling, esp. one that involves some branch of advanced learning or science". Furthermore, professional is defined as "2a having or showing the skill of a professional, competent". There is no skill that are required of a whore, in intrisinc sense. They're all plus and bonus, but in the end of the day, the "world's oldest" more like an object than a subject. World's oldest profession - crafter wins because of the skill included. Also, take notice that even if whores antedated - they probably did - the stonecrafters, they very probably weren't full-time. They possibly hunted, most certainly collected. If someone managed to live solely on the purse she sits on, she wasn't doing it in institutionalised manner.

You might think I'm a dummy, but hey, I'll go with the paleontologists.

Working with stone isn't even close to the top 10 oldest jobs.
