The Real Problem/Solution
Well, as of late all I get to read about is "I hate you Blizzard" and "Because the runes are duped" and "WTF WHERE'D MY GODLY WEAP BOTD GO??". Frankly, I'm sick of it. The real problem isn't the dupers, it's not even Blizzard. The problem is us. All of us who play this game. Your approach (which encompasses 99% of all of us who play) is all wrong. A month ago, after countless magic find runs and boss killings and baaling, realized this:
We don't play together. Greater good? Huh, you say? What's that? Gifts? Kindness? I laugh at what you call "giving". All you give away is something that you don't want anymore, something useless to you. Here my newblet friend, take this Sigon's Armor, it's my "gift" to you. In all actuality, that poor new player is going to think that their new gift is the godliest thing out there, and probably continue using it on that sorceress for as long as they possibly can. They will not understand that it's intended only to help you get through a certain part of the game. They won't use it how it's supposed to be used. And what's it do for you? It makes you think you are the nicest player on battle.net.
What do I mean about not playing together? Well, simply put, look at our actions. We kill bosses who are quick and easy to get to, over and over again, alone. We run the Pits, alone, over and over. When we are in games with other people, we desperately try and snag that golden named item that just dropped before anyone else does. Just look at that hacks/exploits out there. What are they geared towards? Personal gain, and that's it. Maphack, to get to that boss/area/monster within 15 seconds. Pickit, to snatch that item before anyone else sees it touch the ground. Duping, to create copies of what we managed to squander from our fellow players, and then sell back to them for even more. Trigger hacks and scams, to steal from our fellow players. Even the basic insult, to make our Diablo bretheren feel bad about themselves. It makes me sick.
Well, it seems that I have made some pretty steep accusations now. It would be pretty stupid of me to not explain why I think it is I know the better way. So what is it that I propose?
Work together. Become a group, and support each other. I met a very intelligent player that month ago I touched on earlier, and after a very long chat, we reached an agreement, a new way to play the game. At least, new to us, and to anything that we have seen anyone else do. Since then, a few of his friends and a few of mine have banded together, and we have created a force so unstoppable it is frightening. Wealth? Not an issue. Runes? We each have our mules full of them. Godly runewords? I hate Enigma now, I do not understand why people would opt for one over Chains of Honor. Trading? What's that? No more hours and hours of watching text scroll by and coma inducing rates or getting responses of "lol noob" when I offer something on a good item I need to acquire. Magic finding? Magic runs? What are those, other than exercises in futility? I find better items banging my head up against the wall for an hour.
I will explain further. Make characters who specialize, like the damned synergies tried to force ignorant players to do. Now find some friends, which isn't all that hard. Actually play the game, instead of blowing through it like you all know you do. Quest. Actually go after that Horadric Cube instead of transfering one you already have. Go through the side areas. The people you find there will be the people you will want to know. Now, these people are intelligent and are smart. Tell them your build, and explain how it works and it's strengths/weaknesses. They in turn will build a character to compliment yours. Team up, and when you find items, if you don't NEED it (not WANT, want = greed) let the other person use it. If neither of you need it, save it for future friends who will join and further increase the efficiency of your team. Continue to play through. See, this game increases the items that drop with the more people in the game. So does the experience! Go figure! With our team of 5 people, we can blow through ANY (and I mean any) area of the game with extreme speed and progress. Good items drop so often it is amazing. Shakos? We each have about 10. BOTDings? We each have made about 3, with legit runes that won't go poof and cause even more torment upon those around us as we post our sob stories. SS's? These things are so nice, and people think they stink now. I laugh at that. There isn't any item in this game that doesn't have a use at some point or another. The only item we have yet to acquire is the rarest item in the game, Tyrael's Might. But that will soon be ours at the rate we are going, and we have only been at this for a month. What do we do? We team up, and play through hell, killing all in our path at such speed I don't have time to look at my life bulb which never goes down past 2/3rds full. TC85 areas? Oh boy, Blizzard has made it way to easy to get what you all desperately seek from Mephisto or Andariel. Combine the five of us playing, we can clear the pits in about a minute and a half, or the Chaos Sanctuary in about three minutes tops. Whew, it's time for a new paragraph.
So after all this, let me just further say what I mean. Freakin play as a damned group! Stop thinking about you you you and what you want, and how many mules you can fill, or how you can trade off whatever item you just spend the past 3 hours MFing for for the most possible, while buying whatever it is you need for the littlest. When I trade, I get offers so quick because I trade for what I need. I don't worry about worth, because I know eventually whatever I have will fall into my hands again. I know my friends better than anyone, and know exactly what situations they can or can't handle by themselves, and can execute actions tailored to the exact situation at hand and would gladly die for them, even though when we all do our job and don't all simultaneously lag) I don't have to worry about death.
Blizzard has created an awesome game. The only mistake they made was assuming people would learn it's meant to play together and could actually adapt and share with each other. Our greed has consumed us all.
