Re: the pit

Hell only, because in hell, it's a lvl 85 area, meaning the monsters there can drop any item in the game.

Re: the pit

What those smart people said above me is all true. For completeness, people may refer to the level 85 areas as a whole as "the pits," if you've ever seen people using the word as a plural. Those "pit" levels are:

Act 1 Pit Level 1
Act 1 Pit Level 2
Act 1 Mausoleum

Act 2 Maggot Lair Level 3
Act 2 Ancient Tunnels

Act 3 Sewers Level 2
Act 3 Forgotten Temple (In Upper Kurast)
Act 3 Ruined Fane (In Kurast Causeway)
Act 3 Disused Reliquary (In Kurast Causeway)

Act 4 River of Flame
Act 4 Chaos Sanctuary

Act 5 The Worldstone Keep Level 1
Act 5 The Worldstone Keep Level 2
Act 5 The Worldstone Keep Level 3
Act 5 Throne of Destruction
Act 5 The Worldstone Chamber

Re: the pit

The pits are just some of those:

the pit, the mausoleum and the ancient tunnel. The other alvl 85 places are to hard to get to (maggot lair lvl 3), to short (act 3 temples) or much harder (chaos and wsk). People that run pits often run it with a character that lack certain abilities to run chaos or wsk.

Re: the pit

I have to express skepticism with the idea that people say "pits" to mean all of the level 85 areas. I have never heard of that and it's much more likely that it's merely a mistype. When someone types "pits," they probably mean "the pit." (there are two levels after all)

Perhaps it's a Bnet thing. In SP when someone says "The Pits", they really do mean only the Act I special area The Pits. If someone where to refer to the Ancient Tunnels (another lvl 85 area) then they would say "AT" and not "The Pits". Maybe on Bnet everything has been lumped into one, although that's the first I've heard of it.

Re: the pit

it really depends on who you are talking too. In the strategy compendium, there is a guide about 'the pits'. And I for one often take guides as a mean to define things.

P.S. Why would anyone talk about the pits (with an s) while they mean the pit (without an s, thus less letters to type). It doesn't make sense.
It only makes sense when you assume it used to mean something else yet the meaning changed due to some strange reason.

I don't think I've ever read that guide, and that just confuses things. Personally, while not completely correct, I've always called "The Pit" the "The Pits". No apparent reason other than I didn't pay complete attention to the name. Still, differentiating between "The Pit" and "The Pits" is a bit tough, so think I'll stick with the SP definitions but just stay aware of this alternative for "pits".

Re: the pit

I haven't heard anybody in Bnet calling all lvl 85 areas pits either and I also often used "pits" instead of "pit"(not all the time though). I think the main reason for calling it "pits" is, like SnickerSnack mentioned, because there are actually to maps called The Pit: The Pit level 1 and The Pit level 2.

Re: the pit

I'm with the majority. "pits" = Pit level 1 and The Pit level 2 in the Tamoe Highlands. First time i've ever heard about the other usage.

Re: the pit

Just to clarify my original post, I've read in various MF guides and discussions the term "pits" being used to describe any level 85 area, so I'm not just making it up. I'm not basing it on bnet speak, I do my best not to talk to anyone on battle.net (joke... not really). I personally refer to the individual areas by their names or abbreviations, as the majority way may be, but both uses do seem to exist.

Re: the pit

Yeah, I've seen it used that way, referring to all level 85 areas. Used to confuse me how someone could access the Pit from Act II, when they were really talking about the Ancient Tunnels. Now I just refer to them as "AWIFATCCD," or "Areas Where Items From Any Treasure Class Can Drop." Should clear things up.

Okay. The more you know (TM).

But that would really irritate me. I can just imagine:

Code:
After clearing some area, say cows:

LeetBarb: Hey lets go to the pits.
LeetSorc: Sure. I'll port there an shoot a tp.
LeetBarb: k

30 seconds later....

LeetBarb: Hey, what are we doing in act 1?!?!??
what's this cave?!? Are you some noob?
LeetSorc: wtf?
