The Pit

hi can someone tell me where the pit is?
It's a cave in Tamoe Highlands (remember: all the "green" A1 maps have a cave; "The Pit" is the one in Tamoe Highlands).

Take the waypoint to the Outer Cloister and follow the way back. The path splits at some point; you have to try, guess, rely on gutt-feeling, whatever: one of the paths leads to Black Marsh, the other one to The Pit.

what;s in the pit? Like what's special about it?
In normal and nightmare, nothing special. In hell, extraordinarily high-level monsters, including 4-6 unique monsters. This makes it a very popular spot to MF.

Nothing is special about the Pits; it's just one of the more popular lvl 85 areas (actually, "popular" is an understatement. "Severly overhyped" describes it better).

The pit combines a few useful things, especially for characters that can't handle River of Flame/Chaos Sanctuary or the Worldstone Keep:

- it's area level 85; the highest (relevant) level
- therefore monsters there can drop all sets, uniques, runes and base items
- The Pit is reasonably large, with multiple boss packs

- The Pit Level 2 has multiple bosspacks crammed into a small area
- The Pit is only populated with Act 1 monsters

The first 3 aren't unique to the Pit, but the last two pretty much are.

I actually prefer RoF/CS/WSK (lvl 85 as well) over the Pits, because of the act bosses at the end. Also, Durance/Mephisto is pretty good; Bremt Sparkfist and the other council guys in Durance-4 are pretty much like the "multiple bosspacks crammed into a small area" situation, "but" Durance is "only" lvl 83. But again, act boss at the end is always a plus.

Pit Level 2 has a sparkling chest, but these tend to drop rubbish all the time. Doesn't compare to act bosses, IMHO.

peronsally i start in the black marsh, hit the countress, and then go to the pit and hit andy, makes for a fairly streamline system, it works for me

The ancient tunnels in the lost city (act II), the world stone keep in act V, and the mausoleum in the burial grounds (act I) are similar high-treasure class areas with multiple bosses that are pretty easy, although most find wsk tougher than the other 3. I mention this because, depending on your build, you might prefer one of the other areas to the pit.

I have to agree with Myrakh that the pit is overrated. Sure, it drops tc85, but without the act boss the chances of getting that drop isn't nearly as good, unless you have an uber-MFer with 700% MF gear.

I prefer any of the other act boss areas previously mentioned for more regular green and gold drops. I know I'm impatient, but I like to see good results on almost every run, even if they're only tc83.

Most people advocate getting to the Pit from the Outer Cloister, but it really depends on the map seed you get. Sometimes its much closer to your Black Marsh waypoint.

ive actually stopped doing the pits (and andy) on my runs. I might not do efficient runs but i start with my barbarian (baba and gull on switch baby :)) He does meph and countess (theres a lot of champions and unis, and ends with a superuni) then he goes and gets the leg, and opens cows. My skelli then comes in, raises army in pindle garden, kills pindle, shenk and eldritch, then does cows. ive gotten ormus robes (eldritch) and arachnid mesh(meph) + a lot of lower stuff in the last week, which is good for me.

Another bonus to the lvl 85 areas is the number of high level socketed items and socketables that fall. Elite weapons and armors can be very valuable in trade with those making high level rune words, and they fall fairly often in the pit and pit-like areas. You've also got a chance for nice runes, jewels, and charms, just don't expect a sur on your first 3 runs. Its not the end-all area that some might wish for, but there is wealth to be made by pitrunning.
