The Paladin - gone??

Re: The Paladin - gone??

That it is just a name.

It doesn't describe the playstyle of the character.
Well, I must disagree.

You wouldn't have a mainstream title maker such as Blizzard giving random names to character classes just because "They needed a name, and chose paladin". There's more thought to it (even if at first glance this may seem a minor issue) than you seem to think.

But even despite the fact Blizzard isn't in the business of being dispassionate about what they do, you have to consider the class itself and how well it suits in the Paladin genre.

The word 'Paladin' itself is an archaic term describing someone who fights for a cause. Here we agree about any fighter class goes. But the world of gaming, ever since the days of pen-and-paper, has attributed the paladin not just any cause, but an holy cause. So the paladin is described as a holy fighter. Someone fighting for a holy cause. A warrior bound by religion.

Our D2 Paladin is just that if you just browse through his skills, read their names and especially their descriptions (http://www.battlenet.co.kr/diablo2exp/skills/). But even more important, this class is described in the game Lore (http://diablo.wikia.com/wiki/Paladin). There is no doubt the Paladin is a Paladin.

The paladins holy cause is the same as that of the other characters. Yet they are not called paladin.

Anyway that doesn't matter. When playing a paladin in D2, you don't get the feeling at all that you are fighting for a holy cause. You are a monster slaying lunatic.

Blizzard could have picked a number of different names and it would still be the same. For example Crusader, Templar, or Knight.

This is going crazy off topic. I simply meant that a similar character could easily see a return to D3 under a different name. Much like the wizard already does.

The wizard ain't a mage, it's a wizard. He doesn't use 'simple'/elemental magic yet high magic. That's why there isn't a fireball for the wizard while there is a 'fireball-like' skill for the witch doctor - who seems to be the simple magic user.
Oh and that is why he use small tornado spell...
Wizard and Fireball theme is as old as Fantasy genre.

In my last post as stayed how they (Blizzard) wanted created it so there is difference between this two mages (Wizard, Sorceress).

yes there is a difference, but there are differenece between the old and new barb at the same time. they are not gonna give us the same charecter again, but they will compare and have simularities to previous classes.

I hope there will be no paladins ( barb is the only one returning from d2 as we all know), or any paladin variants in D3, i hate this most typical class " knight in shining armor", omg so boring and totaly no style, this doesnt even feel D3 at all. Just imagine paladin in D3,lol.
Lets pray for it and start the celebration when we will see there is no paladin in D3. :congrats:
go crap ur pants...hrm....spontaneous reaction...well um, what i hope that blizzard meant by "The barbarian will be the only returning class in Diablo III" was that he is the same dude as in diablo II, if they put a paladin in d3 he could be a new dude but the same class...

I've heard about a class described as a "dark paladin" (warlock or something like that)... This should be great... But it's all speculation...
Maybe u r talking about Dark Knight/Death Knight ???

Wizards also have a "timestop" light. Wizards also have a melee range, instant cast aoe spell and a channelled beam spell. Similar archetype but totally different style.

Sorry guys, but there won't be any Death Knights, Vampires, Demon Warrior Sephiroth wannabes.

last two classes are gonna be Mageslayer (A class that can focus on either bow/crossbow or upclose melee with finesse and some minor defensive spellcasting) and Monk (Kung-Fu badass with auras and stuff).

You heard it from me first.

Wasn't the assassin the mage slayer? Natalya for example was a hunter of mages AND an assassin but if there was a mage slayer class why wouldn't she be that and not an assassin?

Only 1 real archetypal plate class?

A kung fu class? So what exactly would he equip as a weapon? If staves then I think it's weird that he'd only have 1 weapon type at his disposal.

Not saying you aren't on the right track, just wondering if it needs to be thought through a little more.

I like to idea of a monkish class with auras but I don't think the robe-wearing type monk really fits that well. What does he then look like in Godly Full Plate of the Whale? The idea is all classes can technically use all items but I can't imagine your kung fu guy in full plate with a sword and shield.

Monk would use staves and fist weapons. Some monks even fight with broadswords and a spears IRL.

Also, what would a sorceress look like in full plate armor? Hum!

Mageslayer isn't an assassin, so much as a mercernary warrior who kills mages for a living and employs some magic of his own for defensive/counter purposes.

In other words, an assassin would try to be sneaky about killing a mage. Mageslayer would just walk up to him and be like "Boom! I just chopped your head off *****!"

Or He'd dispell all of the mages protections then shoot him in the face with an arrow

You missed the main point in the Mageslayer thing - Natalya WAS a mage slayer yet she WAS an assassin. Anyways, a class that's main abilities are just to kill mages is lame.

As for Sorceress in full plate, in the D2 world it works fine since a sorceress isn't a real thing. A monk it thus it's stupid for them to be in full plate (and only have access to 2 weapon types).
