The Paladin - gone??

Did I read somewhere correctly that the Paladin will not be in D3? If so then that is unfortunate. Pallys are one of my favorite classes minus the Hdin. Just something about them that I loved. Maybe they will have something, one can hope.

I've heard about a class described as a "dark paladin" (warlock or something like that)... This should be great... But it's all speculation...

Yes, Blizzard has confirmed that other than the Barbarian, there won't be any returning classes in D3. We might get one in an expansion, but not in the main game.

However, that doesn't mean we won't get a class that plays similar to the Paladin.

I'm betting there will be one similar to the Paladin but without the whole aura concept. They probably want something that feels really practical in single player, which Paladins, although able to fare fine on their own, were really designed as a multiplayer class to support a group.

my money is on deathknight :p some type of defensive melee and then another all around class like the amazon was. I'd love to see a monk :)

They said none except barb will appear, and a month later introduced wizard, which is pretty much the sorceress with changed name of the class.

So most likely a paladin will appear under some alias.

No it's not.

Fine, they are both caster yet that's were the comparison stops. Wizards use high magic and seem to be a little slower yet with more powerful skill - just look at how slow teleport is and all the buffs. While the sorcerer is pure elemental and aimed at very fast cast rate - again, just look at teleport or fireball.

Note that this strengthen the point that we won't see classes come back yet that we will see classes with a comparable game play.
Just not to similar.

@Daedrith: and would that we, a paladin without the aura concept. All that is left are some combat skills - that can't be similar to the barbarian - some shield skill - though you can't fill a tree with just that - and some heaven magic.
There has to be a second aspect about the character. I just don't see enough skills for just that. Any idea what could be thrown in, to supplement the loss of aura's?

Well, she's a magic-wielding woman. What's there NOT similar? ;)

If you meant gameplay differences, maybe. But I took their words literally. ENTIRELY different classes - no wannabe lina inverses this time.

Re: The Paladin - gone??

I just cant help to think that all classes will come back from d2.

D2 - D3
Barbarian - Barbarian -This class is the most diffrent from d2, all they kept seems to be whirlwind, but its all based on barbarians str.

Wizard - Sorcerer - Same old skills with a new touch - Fire/ice/lighting

Necromancer - Witch doctor - Summoning pets, curses, and spells.

So the rest of the classes should be an amazon called Archer which has diffrent add dmg to arrows (maybe spears too) and som defensive skills. Last class is a fighter kind probably named Fighter, which got auras and diffrent attack combos.

You bring up a good point. I wouldn't so much see the entire idea of auras being removed so much as the mechanic being changed so that they can have more single player value. I do hope that there will be some "support" abilities in the game, not necessarily in a specific class but perhaps dispersed here and there throughout each of the classes so that it isn't one player's burden, if you will. Off the top of my head, I don't have any ideas for how a new paladin class' abilities would work, but considering Blizzard has a reputation for borrowing other games' ideas and improving upon them, I would look to other games for ideas.

so far the WD has been shown to only have one summon, not counting Zombie wall, plague of toads and firebats wich are all offensive attacks, not summons no matter what anyone says.

I never understand what people see in paladin in diablo 2.
Worst skills pool from all classes plus bad aura system, they should bring paladin in d3 and make him much, much, MUCH more better designed.

It's possible they'll scratch the concept altogether and just move on to another type of melee oriented class. Melee classes are definitely fertile grounds:

An homage to D2 most used hireling perhaps, or a more fleeting fighter reminiscent of a rogue or thief archetype. Possibly a samurai-type with a strong emphasis on mental abilities. Or even grab the still missing archer-type and make it an hybrid melee fighter,... I dunno. The world is their oyster.

Definitely I'm convinced however that, of the two classes still missing one will be a melee oriented class. Or at the very least an hybrid.

You have no clue about a Paladin, They were an amazing class, I played Paladin's since Diablo 2 was released and there was nothing that could stop him.

I hope they have a Paladin type class in Diablo 3 which I suspect they will with some major differences.

Just her specific background, and most of the actual abilities.

Necromancer - Witch doctor - Summoning pets, curses, and spells.
Conceptually Witch Doctor is dark and spiritual like Necro, but he's primitive like the Druid and zany in his own way. In terms of play Skull of Flame looks like Sin's Fire Blast, Firebats is like Inferno or Arctic Blast... his offensive skills are nothing like what the Necro has, and he seems to have less basis on summoning.

You can find only the similarities in concept and skills if you try hard, but they really don't correspond like that if you look properly.

As for Paladins, we all know they're huge pansies anyway. :p

lol uh sorry to point this out but they only rock because of their bugged skills. hdins with unblockable magic dmg that gets boosted by a melee aura... smite that cant be blocked and doesnt take into count AR or DEF (and doesnt dmg shield but the weapon instead) and zeal which is usually easy to get by unless they are using LT.. this was in reference to pvp...

rather not see him but some new char. that samurai with mental skills sounded pimp. but like idk about the fighting system... cause its pretty basic swipe swipe and not all fancy like a samurai or ninja would be. ya know? but i loved the assassins mind blast skill. but uh what was the deal with that level 1 skill of hers?! can u say worthless?

He actually seemed to heavily rely on Summoning in the gameplay videos released last year.

They introduced him with summoning, so that shows that summoning may play a big part in his skill tree. Also when they claimed "He can handle himself on his own" basicly what they did was scare monsters away using something similar to the terror curse and summon monsters to help him. Seems summoning is a huge part of the game for this guy.

I'd prefer they just scrap the Witch Doctor and bring in the Necro again because the Necro was always my favourite character.

You must be kidding. The WD only "heavily relies" on summoning because a pure-ish caster lacks heavy armor and a big red orb. The summons will most likely barely deal damage until they explode. Even in the gameplay trailer, in which all the monsters, bluntly put, sucked, the minions were mediocre at best in terms of dealing damage.

Also; stupid arguement for bringing the necro back.
