The Hiatus Is Over: Untwinked Sorceress Reaches 99

Hiatus, an untwinked-99er-to be, began her journey in June 2016 as my second entrant in @Kitteh’s relaunch of the untwinked 99er challenge (original untwinked 99er tourney thread is here). Hiatus was created to provide some, erm, breaks as Mercy, an untwinked assassin, plodded her way to the goal.

When Mercy hit 99 in May 2017, Hiatus was part way into level 96. Along with progressing Phaedrus, an untwinked Pally and my third entry, from level 91 to level 94, Hiatus has been the main focus of D2 gaming time since then.

We’ll start with a vid of Hiatus pinging 99, then stats and gear, followed by a rundown of progress and reflections and finds, and then some concluding thoughts and thanks.

Progress, Reflections, and Findings

Hiatus started while Mercy was progressing towards level 95, quickly making it to level 85 as a pure Blizz sorc, mostly on Pindle. She then started mixing in AT, eventually hitting level 91, but still lacking some basics (including a 4os Monarch). But she found a 3os eTomby!

At level 92 she transitioned to some LK in search of runes, with a very nice run of runes leading to her HoTo. After a little break due to work and vacation, she hit level 94 in AT and finally found Shako and a 4os Monarch.

She slogged her way to 95, and was only a level behind Mercy. Mercy got the bulk of play time through the end of year, but Hiatus eventually focused on LK to get a Ber for CoH so that she could transition to CS. She eventually hit 96 in late January 2017 (I’d started the Pally by this point also, taking him toward level 90) but was then shelved until Mercy hit 99 in May 2017.

Hiatus got the bulk of play over the next couple weeks, hitting 97, with a [email protected] HoTo reroll mixed in. She set a goal of 25M XP/week, mostly surpassing it. She had some nice finds and runes for Infinity along the way to hitting level 98 in September.

Hiatus switched to pure lightning after testing, using her last respec. About 11M into Nihl runs she had a nasty mishap, dying and then again with body recovery kit on resulting in loss of gear. Thankfully, her switch to lightning made the loss of gear manageable. And she got a nice CtA reroll and a quick Mara’s to replace the lost one as she gained back the lost XP.

At this point, it was back to avoiding deaths and setting a weekly goal, which she settled on 20M XP, hitting 98.25 before leaving for vacation in early October. After being away six weeks, Hiatus got back to running in mid-November, hitting 98.5 around Thanksgiving – and finally finding her Arachnid’s! :rolleyes:

With an assist to @ffs and @Yng, Hiatus swapped in Bloodfists to complete her gear (with the exception of a slight charm upgrade later on). She hit 98.75 and then completed the last ~tenth of the level before pinging 99 yesterday with a major boost from Ancients quest reward. :)

In general, she was relatively slow for the last level, with only 1 skiller to start (a second dropped along the way) and no Griffon’s. The lack of Griffon’s and skillers was felt. Given her gear available, however, I don’t know if anything else would have been faster. Maybe pure fire for Nihl, but she felt obligated to fry him to complete the elemental trifecta of sorcs in the 99er thread. She could have stuck with Blizz or gone Blova, but killing only Nihl, as those builds require, wasn’t in the plans due to loss of drops.

Speaking of which, Hiatus had some nice finds along the way, contributing a fair bit to my overall grail and eth grail. The key runewords and total remaining high runes is below:

Overall, Hiatus made it to grail -33, with mostly TC3/TC87s (and Cow’s Set) missing. There was only one exceptional unique (unique cedar staff), Seraph’s Hymn, Frostwind, Fleshripper, and Nightwing’s missing otherwise. As with Mercy, there are too many nice items to summarize, so I will just list a couple favorites:

Of course, @Kitteh gets a special shout out for (re)starting this challenge, along with @ffs for having another lightning Sorc far along. Finally, major thanks to all the recent entries for keeping this thread vibrant nearly two years after its start. :)

As for what’s next, Hiatus is going to Mat and then respec to Nova for Cow goodness in search of some bases needed for my runeword grail (and burning some of her runes along the way). Aside from that, she may get some use in future tourneys, although she will not stay untwinked. I will also sort through her stashes and may post some readouts of nice items that I’ve forgotten about.

Phaedrus is almost to 94.75, so I hope to bring him to a round 95 before taking a break from XP runs to quest some characters through. I have my trio of twins project with the Auradin in NM and itching to get him end game gear. I also plan to focus on the untwinked Barb in that project (also in NM) and a new Necro that I started recently.

I also plan to start working on the SPF 99er compendium that I mentioned a while back. I have an outline, some sections written up roughly, and notes for others. So I hope to post something for feedback before too-too long.

Running with a Lightning Sorc as well, of course I've been following her closely so I'll keep it short: Huge congratulations, it was a joy to follow her progress, and as others have said your endurance running to 99 is really impressive! Also big thanks for convincing me to go full Lightning as well after I found that Griffon's, hopefully I'll be joining her some time in the next couple of months so we can even the score with the Trappers. ;) Honestly though, your experience and advice with her has helped my running quite a bit, and I'm sure will continue to do so! I'm glad that Bloodfist tip helped out to return the favor at least to some degree. :)

On the other hand, I'm still mad at you for making we waste so much time on this game haha, you better keep running Phaedrus as promised at least until I hit 99! In return, I will then keep running with my untwinked 99er Necromancer until Phaedrus hits 99 -- deal? ;)

In short: Baal is safer, Nihlathak is more efficient. Provided you can stay alive that is. That's why i've always preferred running Baal. Though i was contemplating on doing Nihlathak for the next one, but then i burned out on D2 so that never happened.

Looks really cool with that Precious lvl 10. ;) But well done. It ain't easy getting there. Didn't follow the journey really, except for the end where you just seemed to fly by. Doing it like that makes it look easy, but it really takes some dedication.

Not to mention that the longer the 99 list gets the less accomplished i feel. Now if we can stop people from reaching 99 that would be nice. :oops: ;)

Out of curiousity: What's this 99er compendium you're talking about?

Thanks for the congrats, everyone! Hiatus definitely had good company along the way, with encouragement and good tips from the SPFers.

@ffs - Phaedrus will get a bit of a break once he hits level 95, but he'll pick back up and keep going at least until HelpYourself hits 99 :)

@DaveW - my estimate was around 12,700 runs for the full level, minus about 1700 due to Ancients quest XP. My rough calculations are in this post and this one. But she also had another ~500 due to her mishap, plus a lot of aborted runs due to LI Nihl, that aren't reflected in the calculations, which also don't account for XP shrines. Short story of it is that the estimate is quite rough.

Also, I agree with @Cyrax -- I wouldn't mess with Nihl in HC. Both my characters had an early death but then made it through without further incident. In SC, the risk of death (assuming corpse recovery or early enough in not to have the full 1/10th penalty) was worth it for my characters relative to higher XP gain.

@Cyrax - saying I'm in competition with your feat is like parents saying their child will be an Olympian after winning the 50 yard dash during the second grade field day. Quite a ways to go before it's even in the realm of the possible, with Phaedrus not even to level 95 yet. :eek: And don't pick on Precious -- he's the rebuild of my iron golemancer that's been parked for, oh I don't know, almost 2 years! But he's handy for cubing gems and rerolling Baal charms.

As for the compendium, we discussed it briefly here. As @Kitteh said, the idea is to pull all the great knowledge spread across multiple threads into one place, with the added benefit of an homage to the SPF history with 99ers since v1.10 dropped.

I think that the conclusion was that you already have a good general plan in place, so it would better to let you do that. Obviously, I am very happy to take part in it if you want input, or to split it up and cover different parts, and then provide input to each other's parts etc. Either way, since you already have a framework in place, I think letting you build on that and contributing where you are happy for me too would be ideal.

Awesome job man!!! Your Herculean effort makes my effort look pitiful, but as long as I am chipping away right?!?

I take it that once running Nihl is decided, one must lose the port to run Pindle so you will have the closer waypoint? Is it possible to have a really good map where porting through 1 and 2 to get to level 3 would work? Since soooo many runs are required every second matters so I would say not.

Part of my problem is that I am in MF mode still and in order to be efficient at XP I need to not pick up as much stuff and of course gear up more for damage first instead of MF first. I wish there was a better way to mix MF and XP so there would still be a possibility of good drops, but as I am finding out on my way to 96 running the Pit and AT, the XP is really starting to suck. Time to do some Baal or CS and slightly alter my gearing.

A compendium would be an awesome thing for sure.

I think progress of all sorts is awesome. As others have noted, it's not a race compared to others, but a competition with yourself, and whatever pace works is the right one. :)

On your question, starting Nihl runs through Anya's portal would add quite some seconds per run. The maps are pretty fixed (e.g., only three options for Halls of Pain), as explained here. I don't see getting to the portal (further than the WP and not allowing telekenesis for sorcs), through Pindle, and to the stairs in Halls of Anguish efficiently, keeping in mind that this is on the order of ~12,000 runs for the last level.

The positive way of looking at things is that even with "only" 200 MF (doable for a sorc with good charms and pTopaz in the Shako), you're probably going to get nice drops from Nihl, not to mention the finds you'll get from the last three levels (96-98) of CS or whatever other target you pick. ;)

Rolls were pretty universally bad, although I don't really see myself using most of these guys. They were basically for the runeword grail. Except for Brand, the roll on that one was a bummer. :(

I still have runes in my overall stash for Exile and Fury -- looking for quality bases for those -- plus Eternity and Pride (or Doom). So good progress on the runeword grail front from Hiatus also!

@DaveW Check this post by NanoMist if you want to compare different targets and their XP efficiency on high character levels. And since I'm apparently plugging this every other week at the moment, I'll have to charge @NanoMist a broker commission for the added SPF fame very soon. ;)

Just linking this to point out that for 98-99 the difference between Nihlathak and Baal is actually huge. As can be seen from Nano's tables, it takes somewhere around 3.6 more Nihlathak runs than Baal runs for 98-99. So they break even at 3.6 P8 Nihl runs per one P8/P3 Baal run. Running Diablo P1/P7 in comparison to Nihl means a factor of roughly 2.4, and for P8/P7 CS/Diablo the factor is roughly 2.8. HC/SC considerations aside, these are the decisive numbers, in conjunction with personal run times, when deciding what to run. The result in many cases will be that Nihlathak is quite clearly the fastest route for 98-99 (in my case it's over 50% faster).

EDIT: As an example, and based on rather rough calculations given I only took short samples of runs with lightning Sorc, let's say you're averaging ~25s P8 Nihl runs, ~2.5m P8/P3 Baal runs and ~1.2m P1/P7 runs. In such case, 98-99 will take ~90 hours running Nihlathak, at Diablo it takes ~110 hours and at Baal it takes ~150 hours. But again, different for each build and just depends on run times.

EDIT: Noticed Baal estimate was not right, now corrected (still very rough).

@ffs, thx for the summary. Like Kitteh said, Nihl is one scary dude, espec on HC. But looking at your calculations, p1/p7 Diablo CS runs are not too far behind Nilhathak. Atm Im still levelling my Hammerdin in NM and waiting to descend into Hell. I may try and get a few levels in the Pits as well before moving through to Act 4 and Big D. Sorry for hijack Phineas.
