The gay olympics ..what a joke

I was watching tv the other day and i saw a commercial for the gay olympics and couldn't stop laughing. What the hell why exclude gay people from regular olympics?I bet a gay runner can run just as fast a straight one. What is so special about them .why do they need their own olympic games? The special olympics .. now that I can understand but this is just absurd. It feels like im living in a cartoon ..family guy or something am I the only one that thinks of this as the DUMBEST thing ever?

So instead of testing for steroids to stay in the regular olympics, do they get tested for butt sex to stay in theirs?

So are straight people excluded from the gay olympics?

If so then isnt that discriminating based on sexual preference?

You mean the Gay Games? There was a lawsuit to stop them (and pretty much everyone) from using the term "Olympics". I don't think it's actually meant to be a real Olympics, it's just one of those community activity things.

The purpose of the Federation of Gay Games (FGG) is to foster and augment the self-respect of lesbians and gay men throughout the world and to engender respect and understanding from the nongay world, primarily through an organized international participatory athletic and cultural event held every four years, and commonly known as the Gay Games.
You don't actually have to be gay or lesbian (or whatever) to compete, for one thing.

Nope.

Had it been exclusive and been called the gay olympics it would have been ridiculous. Since it's just a good humoured sporting event for anyone who wants to take part it seems like a good idea. It seems more like a social event than a sporting event to me, i.e. nothing like the special olympics.

Nor are the gay Olympics excluding straight people.

Not that they are Olympics, either in fact or in name...

Is "Olympics" copyrighted?

If so - OK they better back down and fast.

If not - who's to to stop them from using the name?

Yes. In fact, the Olympics is very strict about others using the word for anything. It took a long time before they backed off from the special olympics. There was also some small event in my small city at the university called the "rat olympics" and they came down like a ton of bricks on 'em.

Olympic and olympics is copyrighted and very strongly enforced.

If you own a shop then put a sign on the window "olympic sale" as as theme during the olympics then you will face a fine for copyright violation.

During the winter olympics an incredible ammount of store owners faced fines because they used "olympic/olympics" in thier advertising.

It is not so much that GLBT people are formally "excluded" from regular sports. It's just that standard sports culture is still, for the most part, hostile towards GLBT people. A summer doesn't go by where at least one sports personality (usually from team sports such as baseball or football) makes a comment about how he wouldn't play on the same team as a gay person. There is a strong association between sports and traditional masculinity...and GLBT participation threatens that. The "Gay Games" and other such events are the result of trying to create a space where you can compete and have fun without having to worry about the jock & locker room sterotypes, bitterness, hatred, etc.

You can read more about this topic at www.outsports.com. This subject is also closely studied in Queer Theory, so I'm sure you could find many articles via Google.

How the heck did they get an internation copyright for the words "Olympic" and "Olympics"?

I mean, that just feels wantonly inept. What other adjectives (or nouns, even) could we start copyrighting? I want dibs on "Light" and "Dark.", and "Yes" and "No".
