The Eternal Question Re-visited. Help on a smiter build too.

I have read quite a bit and seen a few videos of perfectly geared barbs going against perfectly geared smiters that were made to pvp against melee, and with the smiter build specifically to screw melee over, the smiter almost always took majorities. I am trying to build a smiter just for those purposes, just to get under the skin of BM melee characters. The ones I saw had about 100k defense. Assuming I have the ability to get any item in the game, and gear that is as close to perfect as possible, what should my gear be like?

Helm: CoA
Shield: Eth Exile. Either SR or vortex. Maybe Eth hoz too.
Armour: Fort or nigma (experienced smiters, which is generally more useful?)
Weapon: Grief PB (Will zerk be more useful if I stack some IAS?)
Ammy: Highlords/maras/metalgrid(for defense)/rare ammy
Belt: Dungos
Ring: Raven frost
Ring: rare with stats/life/mana
Boots: Treks/ww/rare
Gloves: Dracs/rare glove with stats/ias/res

I was wondering how people actually get to 100+k defense without gear that is specifically built to maximise defense. Even if i max HS and use exile, I will still fall short. Do they use def/life scs? Also, how effective would such a build be against melee?

I would also have the typical stash gear to battle casters, and I will also add to the three resist skills and run them against some casters. Hammerdins are a foregone conclusion, and necros as well. I think I have a shot against about everyone else. Can anyone drop some advice?

Well as for the 100K def question i can see maxed HS max defiance, 9 combat skillers, anni, torch, metalgrid and possibly a read after the forts lvl 20 cold armor, my smiter has only HS maxed with basic smiter gear and he gets up there but i think in the 20s, i mean my defiance merc gets to 26K when the cold armor procs though hes wearing a 3.7 fort...

so think of a reg 2K fort with 9 skillers, anni, torch max HS adn defiance, i think that would be pretty close to 100K give or take and rest filled with +30 defesne Sc's...

as for Pvp cant help ya there, i dont Pvp...

P.S wouldnt be surprised if ppl with endless amount of runes or items (dupers possibly) who would duel with a eth 3.XK fort.. and get there hands on a perf Def eth vortex sheild 258 (with 15ed i think not very good at math) and then the eth adds XX def not sure on that one, so looking at a amazing Def exile

I remember doing calculations once, and realising that the best def one can have is more than 200k. Haha. Anyway, I am guessing that a CtA on a HS sceptre is kinda needed too, even though that is one item that is hard to get, even if you had the currency to buy one.

If you want to go against just Barbs, go with this:

20 Smite
20 Fanat
20 HS
20 Defiance
Rest Holy Freeze

Helm: CoA Ber Ber
Armor: Enigma
Amulet: Good stat / life amulet
Gloves: Cleglaw
Belt: Verdungo
Boot: Marrowwalk or Trek or good Stat/FHR boots
Weapon: Grief PB
Shield: Exile
Ring: Rfrost
Ring: Double stat ring with life
Charms: Defense Life Small charms and enough FHR scs to reach 48% FHR.

I actually agree with it, but shouldnt HF just be flashed? Also, I figure that with a pally's inherent good resists, it would be easy to add to the resist auras and use the, against casters where needed. A smiter would still do more damage than them but maintain max resist.

Yeah, but if I enter pubs it is important that I dont get killed easily by the tons of elemental characters around. Even I I run an anti melee setup, a paladin's inherent resists should allow me to get by with minimal changes when facing both a melee char and an elemental character. Haven't played a smiter since the old Astreon smiter days, although I do have a t/v and a mage that can smite. Besides desyncing and throw teleporting, anything else I have to watch out for against melee characters?

Also, would a range 5 polearm barb be a disadvantage for the smiter because of range differences, or will flashing hf and teleporting up close aggressively and tanking the fewer hit checks work?
