There is always hope...

But truly when you troll 4 web sites, like me, looking for any information about the state of the game you play...you are addicted. :fire:

I usually only troll 2 unless I'm desperate, so I'm not addicted.

My addiction timeline looks much like yours but with more D2, no wow, and a 5 year hiatus in the middle.

I really don't play much anymore - some d2 on the side still but the d3 beta convinced me not to buy the game.

Well if you can take a break for a year without much hassle and weening yourself of gaming, its not an addiction. Its something you love to do, but no addiction ^^

gaming addiction

i could add alot of games to the "addiction" list but I have no problem not playing a game.
I was close to a gaming addiction, skipping social events to game and such (I still went to social events with friends and took vacation and so, but from time to time I would blow of my friends with a lame excuse to keep on gaming) but then I decided to ask my wife out for the very first time and now I still play games but IRL beats any game now, compared to a few years ago, some IRL things had to move for gaming.

I definitely delved into that kind of addiction at certain times for D3. Whenever good streaks of Legendaries were dropping or before when I was making a lot of progress in beating Inferno, I'd pretty much cast off my other responsibilities whether it be running or cooking or stuff like that. I had never really reached that point with a game before, so it was an interesting experience and while it was fun in ways, it was also sucky in other ways. Now I just don't care as much since there are plenty of people miles ahead and no amount of hardcore play sessions or foregoing showers, sleep, etc. will bridge the gap; I'm comfortable to go at my own pace, social events taking up time when they will and whatnot.

Something I'd like to explore though while we are still on the topic: the difference between a temporary addiction and a permanent addiction. Perhaps we're now applying the term "addiction" a little broadly/incorrectly, but say that you do enter in and out of these pockets of addiction with a game; maybe call it captivation. Do you feel like you can be addicted to a brand?

For instance, some people think anything Blizzard puts out is automatically worth it and they'll pre-order, collector's edition, etc. I started to think about this because I'd say I'm addicted to the Final Fantasy series that way. Not addicted in the traditional sense we talked about above, because I never feel super compelled to replay a Final Fantasy after I beat it handily or get close to a perfect file, but whenever one is announced, I'll get pretty excited for it and always pre-order whatever special/limited edition there is. And there could be tons of previews saying it's crap, but I'm "addicted" to having experienced and owned them all.

Probably not explaining that as clearly as I can, but discuss anyway!

I am not exactly addicted in that I can stop playing and go to work / do stuff with wife etc. Not sure how I would go not playing games for a year ....

I think people can be "addicted" to a brand, a series of games, a director, a writer and such, yes.
I'm "addicted" to Tim Burton, I want to see all his movies, no mater how crappy it might be.
But then again if a movie of him really sucked, I will never watch it again, but I will see his next movie.
I'm also "addicted" to the diablo, starcraft and warhammer 40k series, not that I need to have the collector's edition of them all, but I "need" to have every game of the series, I should replace my broken diablo cd's but thats easier said then done.

I think we took the term addiction a little broad indeed.

So yeah lets talk about temporarily addicted and addicted.
I've had a lot of temporarily addictions mostly with games and books.
Getting a new book and needing to read it in one sitting no matter what, eating while reading, going way past bed time, or not even going to sleep at all (thats why I bought all my books in vacation time).
Same with a new game, needing to play it for hours and hours on end.

For the moment I do have an addiction, the addiction beeing my incredible wife, which I'll be married to for 6 months in 5 days (cute? no?).
I'm also addicted to air, food and sleep and a few other things I need to do to survive.
I haven't gotten real addicted to anything so far though, I doubt I will ever get addicted to anything. I know its easier said then done, but I beleive that I'm not really a kind of person to get addicted to something.

Addicted to your wife? Lame!

No, just kidding, that's cool. I can honestly say that I never felt that way though, not even right after we got married.

Let's hope the wife never gets to read your posts Kestegs. lol Otherwise it will be a very long life.

Well yes, let's hope that either way.

I'm not saying I didn't/don't love her, but I wouldn't have classified it as an addiction. Maybe when we were dating, but it's hard to remember.

I used to really love him as a kid, listened to his CDs so many times. I could still recite them word for word I'm sure.
