Musing on addiction for a second, do you believe that the condition of being addicted to something can be overturned just by one's own actions and motivations, or is it something that needs clinical application and treatment to be curbed? Said another way, is it possible to beat addiction of your own accord?

Originally, I thought the latter held to be true (mostly because I believe in the awesome power of human will/determination to tackle just about any problem, especially when self-inflicted), but then as I thought on it more, perhaps when it's at a stage where you can kick the habit yourself you haven't actually REACHED addiction yet.

Hm...

I would think that you can do it yourself, but your second paragraph makes an interesting point. Maybe it depends on the definition of addiction.

I'll have to watch Dexter next week, then I'll get back to you on that.
Lol.

Lol.
I think I see what Captain Goodman did there. Maybe.

And I believe, in the definition I looked up before posting, the one thing that set me off and kind of made me rethink things was that curbing the activity that you're addicted to would cause severe trauma. When I see the word trauma, I tend to think of a result that needs some sort of counseling, medication, or otherwise outside professional help to fix. I could be mistaken in that though or socializing its context, when perhaps it should stand on its own to represent something entirely devoid of societal norms.

Three definition I just read didn't really suggest that, it suggested that you could possibly break an addiction on your own depending in the degree.

I think the issue is that addiction is a very broad term, and one that might need to be further qualified if you want a proper answer.

It is hard to tell, but from what I've heard from talking to Alcoholics is that they never truly break the addiction (in that if they ever have even one drink it can spiral out of control).

Any addiction can be broken by determination, depending on the addiction you have and the severity of it it will be harder.
Compare a cocaine addiction to a smoking addiction, cocaine will be harder for the body to kick of from, but smoking will mentally be tougher to kick.

But for any addiction, the problem is staying of it, 1 more smoke, 1 more shot, 1 more drink and you can spiral back into the habbit.
There are enough people out there that kicked a habbit / addiction for years and then tried it once (on purpose or by accident) and got back into the habbit / addiction.

That's another interesting facet, too. If it's so easy to relapse, do you ever really RID yourself of an addiction?

Depends on the addiction and the severity.
Alcohol and many other substances, mess with your brain and body and those are really hard to get really rid of, meaning you can again enjoy a drink or a smoke without it taking over your life again.
But an addiction like a gaming addiction is more easily controllable, it doesn't mess with your body nor really messes with your brain, well it does but in a totally different way.

No

You can substitute one addiction for another as long as the next addiction holds your attention or fulfills your needs. The one dark side of humanity is that once you travel down certain paths- those paths are always there for you to take. It's a choice, but sometimes not an easy one to make even if it seems illogical, self-detrimental, or even tides the continuation of your species.

Let's examine Darkrealm:
1999-2001 - diablo 1
2001-2004 Diablo 2(LOD)
2004-2010 WoW
2010-2011 - broke the cycle of addiction to gaming for over a year and then....
2011 WoW
2012 Diablo 3, WOW, TL2!!!...
