I've been reading Tomorrow Stories lately, they're ****ing awesome.

I borrowed V for Vendetta the other day, it'll be a while until I can read it though, got to get through a big collected edition of early Green Lantern first.

Comics ... I read them during the Silver age when they cost all of 10 to 12 cents. During that time, I had the first issue of the Atom in DC's Brave and Bold, as well as the first issue of Thor and Spiderman from Marvel.

Although most of them have been lost over time, a few remain ... including the third issue of Spidey (where he meets Dr. Octopus). Someone told me that comic book was worth well over $100.00 today.
It's amazing, talk about good investments.

did you ever get around to going to that site i sent you the link to?

i like a lot of what jim shooter's had a hand in, particularly dark dominion and magnus: robot fighter.

big fan of jeff smith's bone series.

everything alan moore touches.

nearly everything frank miller does (grew up reading punisher war zone).

though i dont normally like the genre of true crime one of my favorite books is torso, by brian michael bendis and marc andreyko. it's about this.
I think I had a look, might go back when I have more time. The trouble with web comics is that most of my time on the internet is already taken up, the only time I can devote to comics is reading on the train.

I've heard good things about Bone, have to try to find some.

You forgot Criminal, The Boys and Captain America.

Other than those glaring omissions, that's a really solid list.

And Dondrei, definitely read Bone. I believe they have all of it in one collection now. It's pretty amazing.

i forgot mignola and hellboy. he also did another one i enjoy Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. i like his style a lot, particularly when he does the lovecraft type monsters.

others i forgot include a few of my favorite DC elsworlds red son and kingdom come. you mentioned dark knight returns, it's great just stick away from the sequal. it's not so good to put it mildly.

punisher: born is a great mini.

i 2nd Y the last man and ex machina. sandman mystery theatre is a great title too, though i'm never sure when ppl say sandman if they mean that or the other one.

edit: i cant belive i forgot preacher! i just got done rereading it. great story, that.

edit2: 30 days of night and its sequal are pretty good... the movie is coming out soon too i think. i particularly like the artwork in them.

Oh yes, I read some Mignola Hellboy, it was good stuff. Red Son I really want to get my hands on at some point, and I liked the volume of Sandman Mystery Theatre my library had.

I suppose I should read Kingdom Come but it sounds like religious allegory, two things I'm not fond of in entertainment (Promethea bordered on that at times... I'm still prepared to read the rest of it if I can though). Pity Twilight of the Superheroes never got made instead.

I like your guys style. I am soooo down for Fables and I highly recommend the series. The writing is incredible and the artwork is consistently enthralling.

Example: When one of the (heroic) characters encounters witch's immortal goons in the forest, all of the continuing cells are drawn and inked in the almost exact style of this famous depiction by Ivan Bilibin.

Basically, they do their research. So when any new undefined character pops up in the novels or you are unsure of their motives, you immediately hit up wikipedia or a reference book. Hell, they even fit Little Black Sambo into the series.

Also, I just recently finished reading The Dark Tower prequel mini-series, based on the books written by Stephen King. I have mixed feelings on this series though.

First of all, I really enjoy the artwork because Jae Lee's pencils are pretty amazing. Also the books was kinda vauge about some things about Roland and the whole of Mid-world, and these comics do clarify. At the end of each comic, there is a supplementary 'explaination' or 'history' story which most of the time is very enlightening.

Some of the time though, the explainations either go too far or just too out of character of your previous assumptions. That is a minor contention, but you find yourself saying, "Is that what King really meant by all that stuff?"
It is still a must read for anyone who enjoyed the Dark Tower series (or at least the first 4 books).

I finished those Green Lanterns (had a few fun moments but I was glad when it was over) and read The Day I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish. It was okay but sometimes I feel Gaiman keeps going over and over more or less the same ground. I have American Gods out from the library, it's in the queue, fingers crossed.

Right now I'm reading V for Vendetta and it's ****ing spectacular. Once I'm done I'll see the movie out of morbid curiosity.

i like both for different reasons. i think they did a decent job updating the atmosphere of the story (that sounded weird, but dont know how else to put it) but still kept the basic elements and elaborated some things as well as cutting some things (of course). i thought weaving did a really good job as V. crazy but not insane.

American Gods is an amazing book. One criticism I've heard is that the characters aren't that deep and exist mostly to move the plot along. Don't fall into that trap. The main character is very simplistic, but that's the beauty of him. Not every protagonist needs to be an eccentric, witty, genius.

Brought this thread back from the dead because I finally read Dark Knight Returns. It's really overrated. Most Miller seems to be.

Hmm, I've read quite a bit since this was updated, I read the first two collections of Bone, it was pretty good. Should try to find more. Another good read was Strangers in Paradise - not without its flaws but still good.

Read From Hell, it was awesome. I'd seen the movie a while back, at the time I thought it was okay but now that I see what they took out (ie, absolutely everything) I'll never be able to watch it again.

Read all of Promethea, which was kind of a mixed experience. It's basically good but some things about it are frustrating. It's didactic, which wouldn't be so bad if I didn't already know what's being taught. And consequently I felt I didn't get to spend enough time with the minor characters, who I really liked (had a similar thing but much worse with American Gods incidentally).

I need more Moore.

If you liked the minor characters from American Gods, Anansi Boys (which was written before American Gods but released afterwards) has way more character study in it, as well as being a lot funnier.

I recently started re-reading 2000 AD, Judge Death is still one of my favourtie comic book characters of all time... Earthlets.

Was a big web comic reader, not so much recently (must catch up on my sluggy), my forum name is taken from a comic called jerk city, which i love to bits (nsfw btw if you're thinking of looking it up.)

i reread all of bone this last weekend, only to find out/remember that i dont have the last issue. it really gets better as you go along. you think it's just a fun little book without any real plot, but it starts getting more in depth as it goes.

also read all of a short lived series (well all of it i have and i'm not 100% sure that it didnt go on) called Sojourn. it's got better artwork than it does story, but it's got some good points.

have been rereading all the hellboy stuff too. i'm in love with Mike's artwork.

Been there, done that. Good book.

And Bone is a fantastic comic. I read parts of it a while back, but never got through the whole series. I keep meaning to try to pick up the compendium, but money is low.

Really want to read some 2000AD, hard to come by over here.

I was going to pick up Anansi Boys at some point. First I have to completely depopulate my library's comic books section though - comics are so convenient because I can read them in three or so train trips, books monopolise all my reading time.

I had the feeling Bone was building to something. Very interesting the juxtaposition between the old-fashioned cartoony funnies section style and all the other styles that are somehow cohabiting the comic.

Liked Mignola's offbeat storytelling and characterisation. Wish I'd read the comics before seeing the crappy movie.
