The Big 12 South tie throws the BCS into a quandry

The final results of this week's Big 12 South college football games are in:

Oklahoma (11-1) wins a shootout at Stillwater against the 11th ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys 61-41. Texas (11-1) beats lowly Tx A&M at home 49-9 . Tx Tech (11-1) escapes with a win over Baylor 35-28.

It's a three way tie for the Big 12 South title for Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech.

Looking at head-to-head games this season: Tx Tech beat Texas 39-33. Texas decisioned OU at Dallas 45-35. Oklahoma creamed Tx Tech 65-21.

Therefore, choosing a head-to-head winner as the Big 12 South Champ leaves much to be desired as: Oklahoma > Tx Tech > Texas > Oklahoma

Per the Big 12 rules, the Big 12 South winner will be selected tomorrow based on their BCS ranking. They will subsequently play the Big 12 North winner (Missouri) in the championship game next week. If victorious, the Big 12 South winner will almost certainly play in the the BCS championship game in January for the national title.

Voters in the polls and a computer will make the decision on Sunday afternoon.

It's time for your say college football fans. Who do you think should be selected as the Big 12 South winner and why?

My vote is for Texas. I don't see any reason why OU should leapfrog Texas after this weekend - especially considering how many points the OU defense gave.

Oklahoma is the only team of the three in the Big 12 South to win against a ranked opponent in an away game.

Texas squeaked by OSU by four points at home. Oklahoma won by twenty on the opponent's turf.

Leapfrogging doesn't quite signify the current position as Texas leads Oklahoma in the BCS polls by only 8/1000ths of a point.

Next argument?

Sooners. OK?
You da man! :alright:

To be honest, arguments can be made on either side of this three headed coin. Coaches, fans, and sports pundits have been pleading their cases all week

None of this is really fair to these great teams.

Division I college football cries for a national playoff system.

I'm talking the coaches poll, the BCS standings are mostly irrelevant.

The Big 12 should revisit its method of determining the conference champ. BCS standings should not be a part of the methodology.

Oklahoma is chosen as the Big 12 South champion.

Let the howling begin ...

OU is going to blow it. Stoops sucks at Bowl games.

Missouri is obviously worse than UF, so maybe OU will blow it against them instead of UF (assuming UF beats Alabama, which is nearly a forgone conclusion in my opinion).

I can't say I'm surprised. Save a few games, OU has played great football for the past few years.

I still think the Big 12 needs to reassess how it determines the division champ, though.

And am I the only one that *doesn't* want to see a playoff system for the BCS? I could easily go for a +1, where the 2 of the 4 BCS bowl winners are chosen to play in the national championship. Since we already have a national championship game separate from those 4 bowls, I don't think it would hurt anything. But if you've got a whole playoff system, it starts to look like the NFL, and the last thing I want to see is players being rested. The big separator between college and the NFL is that in college every game is go big or go home. There is no next year and there is no long term. Players play hard because any game could be the one that gets them noticed by the pro scouts.

I don't want a playoff system. We have survived 100+ years without one, we don't need one now. The arguments over who deserves it is one of the best parts about college football, more passion, etc.

Texas can't ***** too much though, it is their own damn fault. Don't lose to Tech, and you don't have to feel shafted.

A playoff system lets you know who is best at the end of the year, the current system is more about best record over the year.
The Bowls are kind of nice as it's still all opinion as to who's best, the current championship does not result in a clear cut Champion most years

Personally I root for USC every year, but a buddy of mine who went there brought little old Ball State to my notice early in the season and it's been really fun watching them this year.

Seriously? Win three straight games against ranked opponents but lose a last second game on the road and you're out of contention?

I'm not a Texas booster or anything, but asking them to go undefeated (when no one else in the Big 12 could) in order to stop their *****ing is pretty absurd. They had a rough schedule and only took one last-second loss on the whole season. It sucks that they're getting blown out of the championship game now.

Texas Tech and Texas are both getting screwed over. If Texas went, Oklahoma and Texas Tech would be getting screwed over. All 3 teams had a chance to leave no doubt, but all 3 failed, and their failure put their fate into the hands of the polls. It ended up bad for Texas this year, but it was going to have to end up bad for someone.

They're all getting screwed over. It's the nature of the sport.

It would be hilarious if Missouri wins the Dr. Pepper game.

Look at what Oklahoma has done the past 4 years. It would be hilarious, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Would it be Texas or USC that would get the nod if Oklahoma loses?

I could live with the top eight ranked teams in a seeded playoff system (i.e., 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5). The playoffs would consist of only seven post-season games in total and the major bowls could rotate for the championship game (as they do now). The minor bowls could continue on as before.

While such a system would add up to three additional games for two teams, it would potentially end some of the controversial decision-making issues of choosing which team(s) play in the championship game and allow eight top-ranked schools a chance to win the national crown.

I've never understood how college football rankings work. Seems we have this discussion every year.
