The best thing about D3 so far...

No bleeding paladins! For too long these snot nosed stuck up do-gooders have plagued Blizzard's games. First in Diablo II, then in WoW. Arguably they weren't always quite the overpowered fanny bandits they are today... but Blizzard sure seems to be sparing these guys all the carrots and leaving sticks for other classes. Obviously I'm exaggerating somewhat but.. it warms my heart to see that there won't be any of these self satisfied pricks running around spinning stupid hammers and being able to clear the entire game solo in D3.

    edit - typo

First in D&D, then in Rogue-like games (Nethack, for example), then in D2, then in WoW, then... ... but I already forgot three to four dozen rpgs in between...

    ...
    ...

Remember Blizzard saying anything of Dungeons and Dragons beeing a big inspiration for them? I do.

edit: Btw... To be a Paladin doesn't necessarily mean "to be good". They're credited as "Lawful Good" in D&D. But "Lawful" simply means to fight for/enforce the "greater good", in doing so neglecting (at least partially) the worth of the individual. I won't necessarily describe this as good, as they only can be Lawful Good according to the beliefs they have. edit2: Or so to speak "Rightous" is Good. But "Lawful" doesn't equal "Rightous".

Yeah, it's not just Blizzard's games they've plagued, that's for sure ;) Of course, they didn't originate in D+D either. They were Charlemagne's Twelve Peers, fighting for Christianity against the Saracens, and were much celebrated in Medieval and later story and song. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paladin

I'm not crazy about real-world religious conflict in my computer games, and in this day and age the last thing we want to do is glorify the acts of the Christians against the Muslims in the era of the Crusades. Doesn't matter if games associate em with a long list of fantasy religions; you don't have to know a lot of European history to have the association with Christianity. So yeah... I am happy to see em go, too :p

the best thing about D3 so far is that I've gotten to attend blizzcon both years and play it for a few hours each time. :)

I couldn't agree more mainly because players are typically evil and they are playing some 'pinacle of goodness holy man', and this makes nor sense at all. I'm Ok with the paladin class, just not the way game makers handle them. For instance, there should be certain things paladins are disallowed to do. Idk, just as a quick example, they are not allowed to loot other players' corpses. They're supposed to be, you know, the extreme good and holy guys, not theives. If they have to kill another human, it is for some dutiful purpose, not to pick his pockets. But as it stands in all these games, paladins can be brats which really destroys the whole concept and any sense of immersion imo.

As I've mentioned previously: Holy? Maybe. But not good. Especially not in the universe of Sanctuario, where the angels seem to be just as evil as the demons - only in a different way... (For a good example of what I mean just take a look at the Shadows and Vorlons of Babylon 5: Neither of them is good!)

    Transparency in item descriptions.

How many times have a looked at a speed rating in D2 and felt a twitch/twinge of disgust for the words "Very Slow", "Slow", "Normal", "Fast", and "Very Fast?"

How many people know that each class had different modifiers to weapon speed ratings?

    Exactly.

Re: The best thing about D3 so far...

Currently, I have a rather mixed opinion of the Paladin. I used to like him the most, merely because he reminded me more of the D1 Warrior than the Barb did (although the Barb was a cool concept). Though I'd have preferred a darker character.

Nowadays, I think the Paladin and the Barb play too similarly. True, one is more offensive oriented and can dual wield, the other is more defensively oriented and has special shield skills.

But at the end of the day, they're both about walking into a crowd of monsters and just clicking left and right with your primary attack until everyone is dead.

I was surprised to see people moan about how the D3 Barb and Monk are "virtually identical" - compared to the Pally and Barb in D2, the two D3 melee guys are so evidently like fire and water you'd have to be in denial to think otherwise (the Monk especially, seems much more involved than the Paladin could ever be).
Apparently, a lot of poor souls are/were in denial. But now I'm just rambling...

If the expansion pack gives us a "sword and shield" type character, I would hope (s)he would turn out more like what I originally hoped the D2 Paladin would be: A true warrior/caster hybrid, that's basically a good compromise between a caster and a melee fighter, while having a very armored "knight" type appearance (caster/fighter, NOT glass cannon!).

And naturally, a lot grittier than the shiny Paladin.
I'd like something that automatically makes me all Diablo 1 nostalgic and brings my beloved D1 Warrior to mind when I see/play it (a good way to play the D1 warrior was to learn some spells to make him more versatile and varied to play).

The Barb is a potentially cool melee basher, but he sure ain't the D1 Warrior turned more streamlined (and neither is the D2 Paladin with all his boring auras).

Old thread revived, but I gotta say this warms my heart. I never did like them failadins/loladins/etc. Not in D2, and not in WoW (retlol).

Only games I can think of with acceptable paladins are Final Fantasy Tactics titles and Fallout titles.

I love paladins, I always did, in every RPG they are featured. In D2 I never made a hammerdin, btw, that's not the reason.

    To each their own.

This is an awesome idea. It makes perfect sense - there were so many of them in D2, and they were very hard to kill. Some must have survived to pass their knowledge along. The class could have many different types of hammers and auras that all do pretty much the same thing, plus a skill called desync that makes them completely invisible with the click of a button. Really, I'd just like to see the uproar if they actually did it.

the passives. Look like they'll be pretty integral in customizing gameplay, at least to some extent.

Also the best thing: the witch doctor. There. I said what we all were thinking ;-)

i always play paladins id they are featured and in d2 i've never made a hammerdin because i'm not 8 y/o and i like varying my skilluse. paladins are'nt as overpowered as you might think but hammerdins are...yes indeed...
