In other news, the Boy Scouts of America have been identified as a terrorist organization...

Whoa. I just finished reading the whole damn thing. What he managed to do was scientifically impressive. It was also incredibly thoughtless and stupid.

He had potential. How do you go from almost building a reactor in your back yard to being a deckhand in the Navy? Just think of what he might have been able to do if given access to a real lab and technology?

I wouldn't trust him in a lab. No matter how bright, the fact remains that he deceived a lot of people, and put many in danger.

I agree with the "access to a real lab" comment, if only because it would probably come with some real education from teachers who would explain to him how radiation sucks. Hell, any teacher would have been better than the guidance his guardians gave him--"Oh, he blew up his room and the basement and almost blinded himself, so gee, let's just get him out in the back yard where we don't have to think about him any more."

Yeah, I heard about another kid who build a working time machine for a merit badge. unfortunately, neither him, his family, or anyone else who knew anything was interviewed at the time. however, a small side bar was seen stating such in a tabliod later and someone was found who claimed that at one point he made a time machine. No pictures or verifiable evidence has yet been found.

it's in print so it must be true!

    funny thread, good laughs

Amusingly, that was reported in Readers Digest quite a few years back, and they gave much more detail on the actual construction of the "reactor". Showed the article to a couple of engineers 'round here and they started talking about how the kid could have made it more efficient. Crazy people I wokr with that think a scout with a nuclear pile in his yard is banal.

Aren't nerds awesome? "Massive radiation contamination in a dense residential area? Meh. But he could have made it more efficient if..."
