Swineflu - Problem or not?

Re: Swineflu - Problem or not?

My understanding is that avoiding flu isn't about wearing masks, which raise the temperature and moisture around your mouth to levels ideal for bacteria to multiply. Just wash you hands every hour or two, keep three ft away from people and don't touch your face during the day. Ironically porc consumption is essentially irrelevent.

We have cases in the UK, about 15 at time of writing afaik, but I can't say I'm worried personally, this isn't the 1920s. Mostly a media-generated hype with barely more credibility than 2012 doomsday stories.

Re: Swineflu - Problem or not?

I would have to say swine flu has the potential to be a big problem (at least for me). Today at the very small company I work for I was told “not to create a panic, but one of our people has been diagnosed with swine flu”. Furthermore, it looks like another person at our company, who has next to no contact with the first has also caught it (but that is pending official confirmation) . . . so no worries right? Now this first person often uses my desk but I can’t say that I am really worried about health concerns (as other people have mentioned, it seems to be pretty treatable . . . not sure how much this treatment costs and considering the general cost of health care in America I hope I don’t have to find out). So, I thought I might drop in and point out with this post that illness is not the only “problem” presented by the flu. There was some talk about the business needing to be shut down for two weeks, which, while a two week vacation may sound fun, it is something that I really can’t afford at the moment. So, is swine flu a real problem? . . it seems it certainly could be for me . . .

HanShotFirst: Swine flu is no more dangerous than the more common strains of flu that we've had around for a while. Easily treated with Tamiflu or the other drug they use (don't remember the name). Or you could just rest, drink plenty of fluids, and seek medical attention only if you get really ill.

They aren't even recommending for schools to shut down because of swine flu infection any more. I really wouldn't worry about it.
