    svchost.exe???

 There is a little program that I seemed to pick up from upgrading to Windows XP called svchost.exe and it is sucking up all of my CPU. I has like 97% CPU all of the time. If I close it then XP gives me a 1minute countdown until it restarts. Anybody have a clue as how to stop this thing from sucking up all my power or how to shut it off without killing Windows???

scvhost.exe is an executable host for dll's, since dll's can't run on their own. Thus, how much CPU time they use is dependent on exactly which DLL is being hosted. You could have 16 scvhosts running, and have none of them take any CPU time, or you could have just one who sucks it all up. Just depends on the dll itself.

(And if I remember correctly, scvhost used to be called dllhost)

I win, I have 5. And they take up rather a lot of memory between them (~14,000 K according to Task Manager).

It really sucks to not be able to upgrade the memory on this thing... *counts days until getting shiny new computer*

There is a virus called Nachi that makes itself look like the svhost.exe file. I suggest you download Stinger from McAfee and run it.

    More info

    Download Stinger here

Well technically I none either. . . *Hugs Mac and Linux box*

Cain's thingy didn't show anything, however I did mess around with msconfig and other assorted Windows things I hadn't gotten around to and that sped the thing up quite a bit.

That's because I won before the race had even started.

Eh. To each his own. You want to be all high and mighty because you chose a particular OS, you do that.

Me, I'll recognise that each has both strengths and weaknesses, and I'll use whichever one can do the job I need it to do.

Only because you cheated and use Whinux. Cheater.

I beat you all, I have probably 6 or 8 instances of svchost running at home and they really don't take up any resources.
