Less seating/cargospace than a minivan

Need any more?
Gas milage: I agree they are worse than most cars. But it depends on what you are doing with them. Overall, most are not that bad.

Ugly: Your opinion.

Roll over: yes, most have a higher center of gravity. But it's all in the drivers hands.

Soccermoms: probably a good point. maybe they need the carrying capacity?

can't off road: they can't? really? mine does just fine. Okay, I haven't driven them all. But I can tell you this: my Jeep has gone in reverse where most others won't go in drive. I have broken many a swing arm bushing.

ugly: I think we covered this.

minivan: did minivans and SUV's enter a competition that I don't know about?

Let me add this: I cannot speak for all SUV's but my Jeep owns in the snow and it also has excellent torque.

Don't get me started on safety....

amra, suvs and jeeps are different. A jeep is a jeep and an suv is an suv, they might be kinda sorta related but they are different.

Explain.

I want to know what you mean since Jeep is considered the original SUV.

The jeep wrangler is what I think of when I think jeep. I don't think suvs like you see "soccer moms" driving are jeeps they are suvs. Maybe it's just the way people use suvs fore has taken away from that jeep feel but I don't think people really care for the offroad stuff of an suv.

Now people usually take jeeps off road and such so thats why I think they are different.

Okay.

I am wondering where you put the Ford Explorer then.

Anyway, I made my point.

As an aside, pollution these days is way cleaner for ANY vehicle than is was twenty years ago. Except for maybe dump trucks. Food for thought.

I don't care for SUVs, therefore I wont buy one, I don't understand the indignation towards those who have differing tastes however.

actually, i find that most SUV's are just stupidly humongous or they don't have a good inside:eek:utside volume ratio. recently at a car show, i checked out the massive numbers of SUV's there. obviously, all of them were larger than my family sedan (toyota camry). only about 1/4 of them had more overall shoulder/legroom. most of them were even smaller.

gas mileage was worse compared to all the sedans.

i'd say i saw a grand total of... 5 of them that might have been capable of going off road. 1 from land rover, 1 from BMW, 2 from jeep, and the hummer. the most extreme conditions the others could handle would probably be icy paved road, or construction site gravel.

rollovers- of course it depends on the driver, but same driver in an accident with a tall vehicle vs a low CG vehicle, the taller one still has a better chance of flipping.

now, let's talk about practicality:
for a family vehicle- minivans have more cargo room, more seating, and more interior room. and cost less.

hauling/towing- definitely not for work though. pickups have less body weight so, for the same power, it can pull more cargo. again, generally cheaper. i can see where power in an SUV might actually be needed here, if you're going on a family boating trip or something. but not many people buy them for this reason.

general usage- can't give it to them here. don't fit small car spaces, wider turning circle, lower gas mileage...

safety- we mentioned rollovers. the only real 'safety feature' in them is that your feet is at the other guy's head level. unless, of course, the other guy's also in an suv, or truck, or van, or bus...

Jeeps and SUVs are two totally different animals as others here have pointed out.

The Jeep may be the original SUV but they were intended for Off-Roading and driving in really crappy conditions. The modern Yuppie SUV has strayed very very far from that and they no longer have much off-road capabilities (a Chevy Suburban would last about 5 minutes in the woods) and they also are just bad for everyone because:

1) In an accident with a smaller car the guy in the smaller guy is much more likely to be injured/killed than the SUV driver. Considering how hard it can be to see in front of you due to large bulky SUVs blocking the line of sight it makes accidents more common as well.

2) Because they consume so much fuel (the really big ones like the H2, suburban and such) they end up jacking up gas prices for the entire populace. This then hurts everyone and the environmentand its really not nice to piss on your neighbors and let them clean up the mess.

3) A lot more minivans these days don't look nearly as bad as most SUVs and they also get a fair number of passangers/cargo in. If a family REALLY needs a family car then it would be much easier and efficent (due to price/gas consumption/saftey) to buy a mini-van.

In an unrelated note, SUV drivers in my area seem to be the most likely to cut people off, drive recklessly, talk on cell phones and do other dangerous things. I know this isn't a reason to hate them nationwide or even locally this fact still irritates me due to reason 1.

They're psycho-mobiles. They turn your average nice guy/gal into psycho drivers who tailgate, speed, and cut people off. I suppose its the indistructible syndrome.
