SURVEY: solo artist vs original band

Name some artists who were better solo than in a band. Try to come up with really solid ones, don't just name people who went solo. For example, someone might say Sting, but, the Police, arguably, were better than Sting solo. A couple of good ones would be: Eric Clapton, Neil Young, and Tupac. Does anyone else have any good ones?

If I'd heard any Sugarcubes I'd say Bjork, so I'll just assume that she's done better stuff since leaving (since she's done tons of amazing stuff solo.)

That chick from Bananarama... don´t know her name... she went on to co-found the Shakespear sisters, who rock.

To the OP: Eric Clapton will never be as cool as when he was in the Yardbirds. Just so you know.

MAJOR EDIT:

Don´t make me hurt you DM.

Peter Gabriel No.
Rod Stewart No.
Michael Jackson No.
Diana Ross No.
Robbie Williams Yes.
Belinda Carlise Ehh... Hells no. She´s good but the Go-Gos ROCK!
Gloria Estafan Yes.
Enya Yes.
Fatboy Slim Yes.
Bobby Brown Don´t know.
Ronan Keating Yes.
Ricky Martin Hard to tell. At least not any worse than Menudo.
Alison Moyet Yes.

Debatable
Stevie Nicks Don´t know.
Annie Lennox No.
Art Garfunkel No.
Rick Wakeman Don´t know.
Lou Reed
NO WAY! I know you just put him here to piss me off. That must be it.

I dunno... I really like a lot of Clannad's music... and arguably, Enya has done some really good stuff, but yeah... I guess maybe Enya has the edge, but Clannad still has awesome stuff.

I'll add a reverse artist here...

Sammy Hagar... had a mediocre career when solo before... and totally RUINED VanHalen when he joined the band :p

good ones

There are a lot of good ones so far, I really liked Hatfield and Bjork, exactly what I was talking about! However, I'd have to debate Peter Gabriel, I mean Genesis? C'mon, alot of people would disagree with that. Also, without getting into it, Diana Ross & Belinda?

As far as Clapton goes, I know about the Yardbirds. Clapton did a lot more for music after that group. I don't mean making a lot of albums, or money, but having an arguably bigger impact. I think that Eric Clapton had a lot more impact than the Yardbirds ever did. I also think that Eric Clapton is much better as Eric Clapton than the Yardbirds.

Great replies so far...

Siobhan Fahey - Shakespeare's Sister was NOT solo, so she doesn't count.
Thanks... I was starting to worry that I would have to look it up.

Shakespear Sisters withdrawn.

I didin't think this was a thread about whether we actually like the artists, but whether they were better solo. The only way to objectively judge that success is to look at record sales/popularity.

Having said that, Peter Gabriel's work since he left Genesis is a hell of a lot better than the work produced when he was their lead singer. Don't get Genesis with Phil Collins confused with Genesis and PG. That split was a mutually benefical parting of the ways - both PG and Genesis went on to better things.

Belinda Carlise solo is a lot better than the Go Gos who had one hit I think, and I can't even remember it.

Diana Ross is debatable I agree -I think I put her in the wrong section.

Drosselmeier:
How can you say the Faces were better than Rod Stewart?
Ditto The Jacksons better than Michael J Solo?

Lou Reed then? The Velvet Underground is without a doubt one of the most influential groups of all time. Lou Reed solo is nothing but bland, at least after Berlin. There´s no way he´s better solo.

The Go-Gos had Hey Mickey, Vacation (I think that´s the title) and We got the beat. The only song by Carlisle that can match those is Leave a light on for me. I´d take the Go-Gos over Belinda any day.

This thread is great. How do I rate it?

EDIT: I didn´t see the part adressed at me.

The Faces are a lot better than Stewart solo. I´ve never been a great fan of either but at least I can stand the Faces.

The Jacksons were pretty cool back when they first broke... ABC and I want you back and all that. I´ve never liked MJ. I guess I´ll might have to give you that one though since MJ is the king of pop.

I still think LR is influential - in the same way that Iggy Pop and Rick Wakeman (Yes was his group I think) are.

Both Lou and Iggy pretty much live on their old laurels. I don´t think anyone would have paid much attention to Lou Reed if he hadn´t been in the Velvets before he went solo. Especially since his early solo career was pretty unsuccessful.

Iggy would never have gotten away with his patented "make a good record. Treatment. Make a piece of Crap record. Treatment." thing if he hadn´t been in the Stooges.

EDIT: I forgot to post this.

Is there any way to go but down after a hairdo like that?

I don't want this post to be a popularity contest, or one based solely on the number of records sold, but something more intangible. I like where it is going, but don't throw record sales into the mix, that can easily be found elsewhere. This is just a post to see people's opinions and how they differ. People who post here like music, and some are going to be more passionate about it than others. Its hard to be passionate about # of records sold.....
