Surprised? Might as well be

Surprised? Might as well be

I'm sure we have all heard the tired old adage of truth being more amazing than fable. When was the last time you got one such a feeling? I guess mine was the real-life Daredevil, Ben Underwood and his ilk. Echolocation as a concept gets two thumbs up, third pending.

So, what raised your eyebrow?

A British swimmer qualified for the Beijing Olympic team this week. She has one leg.

Him playing the video game.
Yeah, that was one of those confusing moments.

For those of us who can't view it, what is the gist of it?
OT linky? I guess the moniker "real-life Daredevil" sort of gave it away, but since he was not 1:1 equivalent, I guess I should mention it - at least not to mislead anyone. The kid (14 at the time of shooting the document and the shorter clip I linked to, now grown up as far as I can remember) was able to use echolocation. He clicked with his tongue, sound came back, he knew where stuff was. Him rollerskating in the street with cars and stuff was... interesting. He is on Wiki, but it's mainly a hasty synopsis of that tree-minute-clip.

Gief links! I want to see this one.

It is a news story of a totally blind 14y/o that uses echos to "see". he clicks his fingers, and can identify items, play in a pillow fight amd do incredible things.

This video was freaking amazing. But still, be a human with sight.. or with echolocation?

Thanks for the info. Impressive to be sure. The human mind is so cool.

Seems it might have been a little mis-reported here as the swimmer, Natalie Du Toit, was South African, according to this article, not British.

It's also mentioned on her Wiki entry.

With sight you can see in the light. With echolocation you are not limited to this. I would probably still rather have sight, but having both abilities would be great.

True, but the idea of not having any color really sucks.

Don't get me wrong, but it's not like you can enable or disable something just like that, so you can say it sucks. I don't want to imagine how would it be, and i'm really thankful that my eyes are ok. Best wishes toward him.

Actually, my friend's classmate is blind as well, and it's amazing what he can do. He rode a bicycle, for example.

That dude got himself a Wii on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show", before it was available for us normal peeps. What a lucky little bastard.

You can comfort yourself with the fact that he won't be able to play it since he's blind, and... cannot therefore... play...

Oh shoot. :undecided:

No?

Nvm, i was not referring to that.
Yeah, there is a difference between closing your eyes but knowing your vision still exists and knowing your vision is gone forever. But it's as close of replication as you can get.
