    superior armor max defense+1 question

I'm wondering why a superior armor adds only +1 to defense; 1 defense doesn't help.

It doesn't add just 1 to defense, at least not in general, but before I'm going to elaborate on the topic, please explain what you mean exactly.

I'm guessing he means why superior armors get max defence + 1. :scratchchin: I.e. an AP gets 524 +1. I don't know why, I'm interested too

Edit: I mean the base gets max +1. I'm sure you know what I mean :p

I think that is when the % increase is not enough to increase the item by 1 it displays as +1 instead. If its like a Superior Quilted armor thats maybe 5% of 10 is 0.5.

But why make it have +1? Why not just simply make it just max defence? :p

Re: superior armor max defense+1 question

Maybe the reason is to be granted that superior items with +%ed will have more def than normal quality ones(like kavlor mentioned above). For most of the items that will be true without +1def bonus to the maximum def. But for low defence items like buckler, cap and few others the +%ed will not result in a better def than a normal quality item with maximum def without the +1def bonus.

The Arreat Summit has updated info about superior items for those who are interested - http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/basics.shtml#superior

Any armor with ed% you add +1. ex. sacred armor 601*1.15=691 max non eth defense if normal sacred armor.

Re: superior armor max defense+1 question

Let's say you had 2 armors.

#1 was a regular armor, that just happened to have the best def roll you could get as a base. Let's just say it's 500 for example.

#2 is a Superior. If the rule wasn't Max+1, and let's just say it takes a random roll on base and then adds whatever % from the Superior.... just for the example let's say "Superior +3% Enhanced Defense."

Welp.... what if the 2nd armor had the lowest roll as base, and then after adding the +3% EDefense it actually wound up having much much lower Def stat than armor #1? In reality, in what way would it actually BE "superior"? Every stat is the same (dur, str req, etc), and it actually has lower Def. One would almost want to term it "Inferior" =p

I think Blizz came up with that Max+1 rule to insure that when a Superior armor is found, that is in fact really better than a regular armor, even if in practice it's just a few Def points higher than a top roll base on a normal armor. At least I assume that is Blizzard's thinking on the matter.

I believe Superior armor gets the highest defence anyway so it will always be better than a none superior armor.

Re: superior armor max defense+1 question

Not if the none superior armor happens to have max base defense, the +1 ensures a superior armor always has more defense then a none superior one.
