Summon Resist

Is Summon Resist worth maxing out, especially in Hell? If I max it out, I can get it to Level 43 with my equipment, and although I'm not sure exactly how much Resistances that'll give my Skeletons I'm sure it'd be quite a bit. Thanks for your input!

Well, if you have +23 to summoning skills already, then the difference between 1 point, and 20 points is the difference between

68% and 72% resistance

Now I don't know about you, but that doesn't seem like a decent return on investment to me.

summon resist is a 1 pt wonder.
as rickcarson said, if you have that much +skill to boost your skill, its useless to max out that skill in the 1st place.
the 19 extra skill pts have much better use in other skills.

First up, I didn't say that. I answered his question, which was 'what are the numbers involved?'

What I said was that he'd go from 68% to 72%.

Technically, thats not useless.

I did then offer the opinion that I did not feel that it was an effective return on investment, but thats just an opinion.

Its like the people running around saying 'only put 1 point into Clay Golem!' - well, thats their opinion. Unlike Summon Resist, Clay Golem does not have diminishing returns (well, the slow% diminishes, but my opinion is that the whole point of a Golem is to tank, and the salient point being the hit points involved).

A somewhat contrived example of where you might choose to put more points into Summon Resists in this situation would be to hit a particular number, eg 70%. Maybe you have a bunch of 30% fire/cold resist items, and want to be able to churn out quad immune Iron Golems???

Maybe with +skills your Clay Golem has 3k hit points, but you decide (for whatever reason) that you really want him to have 10k hit points? Well, you'd put extra points into it, but everyone around here would jump up and down and pitch hissy fits about how you were just wasting your points.

The slightest deviation from 'the group think' and you get jumped on. I'm like 'hello people! Its called freedom of personal choice! Deal with it!'.

Now to us it may or may not be useless, but if its Time Burglars *choice* to put points in, then fine. We don't really know anything else about the proposed build. Maybe he has a cunning plan?

People asking "is it worth" usually aren't currently building something weird; they just want to know whether the skill is generally worth it.

Believe it or not, but for a standard build there are generally accepted things --- like putting one point into summon resist. And most people are just looking for that: a viable build, preferably one that works well and kicks behinds. This is especially true for summon resist --- you can sink 20 points there, but everyone but a few is better off putting only one point there and using the other 19 to increase killing power.

The thread starter made absolutely no hint that he's trying some special build. If he does, it's his own fault --- it's a reasonable assumption that people will assume you are doing a normal build if you don't say anything about it.

I know you are the iron golem freak, and maybe 70% in summon resist plus 30% from items will create an immune golem (despite people saying otherwise). However, along the same lines --- Iron Golem isn't a good choice for a normal build, and most people will NOT put valuable items into an iron golem. It's a weird/special build, and the thread starter made absolutely no indication that he's going that way.

And, this is a forum where multiple replies are allowed. I have simply posted a quick answer, saying that 1 point in SR is enough. The next poster has backed it by showing actual numbers. Feel free to tell the thread starter that maxing SR is worth it --- it's his decision, in any case, and if there are reasons to max SR it's always good to hear them as well.
