Stupid? Well, at least you gotta give them credit for persistance...

Here is how a trade scam that went horribly wrong.

    Me: 18-19 Storch
    Other Dood: 20-16 Ptorch

    Opening Round:
    me: hey
od: wasup, i got a ptorch 20-16 if you add a hr.
me: o cool, aight... you have with you?
    od: come to game xxxx/xxx
    od has exited the game

    Second Round:
    me: hey
*trade screen opened, both parties put up their items, all went well. but all of a sudden, the trade screen closed when both parties checked green arrow.
    me: ?
od: o shoot, i don't think i can. we might have to do a drop trade
me: uh... no... we are not doing a drop trade
od: i am serious! something is wrong.
me: uh... dood... i have another offer coming. make up your mind if you want to trade
    od: okay, i show you
*open trade screen and do the same thing
me: okay, you are wasting my time, we not doing drop trade.
    od: come on man!
me: if you are going to scam me, it failed horribly. just exit game
    od: drop trade!
    me: cya

    Roud 3:
    during trade, this came up
od in PM: Are you stupid? You can't trade torches. WTF???

Meanwhile, I am having a good time trading with this other dood. We had a good laugh at this whole thing and went out separate ways.

    -----------

Well, if I am a scammer, I would have stopped by line 2. It's one of the dumbest scam that failed, but at least you gotta give him credit for persistance.

(and the ability to lie in your face even when lies spotted)

consider for future career: politicians or owners of oil company (oh you mean this huge billion dollar profit? don't mind that, we are losing money! let's raise gas prices)

umm, you CAN'T trade torch for torch via the trade screen.

it's one of the many irritating things in d2.

You can't trade unique charms for unique charms, I thought you knew that.

Well, the drop trade part being torch for torch would go fine... However, the HR that was involved would be a big problem... He would be able to snatch your HR and take his torch with him, which is the more sought after of all torches, and leave you with the same torch, and one less HR...

yeah, you cannot do such trade : torch for torch by the window
you have to do the "drop trade" in this case

There's no risk (except C/E of course) on a drop trade if :
    - It's Torch for Torch
    - The game is private and passworded
    - There's nobody else in the game except both traders
    - You grab your torch quickly (to prevent some friend of him to join and grab stuff)

The prerequisite is that you MUST show your torch and you must SEE his torch on the trade screen before, to make sure that he has a torch in his inventory.

The guy can only carry 1 torch, and so do you. So, either he picks up your torch, and can't take his torch back, or he keeps his torch, and won't be able to pick yours...

As mentionned above, the main problem comes from that extra HR. That's probably where the scam intention lies .

Torches can be traded for other items and even other unique charms, unless those charms are Torches.

    wow. wow.

talk about feeling owned. i feel like that other dood that said mal was a hr.

    WOW.

I JUST GOT PWNED REALLY REALLY BAD

the whole pole walking with a 1 inch gash on my head and now THIS. what more could happen this week?

    sigh...

well... for future reference (after i test it out of course), where is the safest place for drop trade? (and also, i heard of hacks where someone is allowed to hold 2 torches... then drop trade is not entirely safe per se)

    ----------

edit: in any case, i converted my torch through a series of 2 trades into 2 5% bk rings. not a OH MY GOD it's so good deal trade. in fact, might have suffered value on my end, but at least it's a solid trade and no scam involve.

Basically for a torch for torch trade anything goes, since you can only carry one. Just make sure it's a private passworded game, you see his torch in the trade window before trade (and show yours), and before dropping make sure no one has joined the game. I've seen people joining the game without the notification of it coming out publically, so check your party window for the game participants.

I don't know that there's any safest place to drop trade torches, per se, but you certainly don't want to move areas after showing torches to each other in the trade window if you choose to go this route. One of the more common scams to be aware of is:

    1) Both people show torches in act 1.
    2) Scammer says "now we go to act 5 to drop trade."
    3) You take waypoint to act 5 while scammer goes to another waypoint, quickly drops torch, then goes to act 5.
    4) You drop torch, scammer picks it up because he can, then relogs another character to pick up his original torch wherever he dropped it.

Not to perpetuate rumors, but I've also read accounts claiming someone was able to carry two torches at once (which I doubt since it was probably a scam like this), or had a pickit type program that as soon as you dropped your torch, tried to pick it up over and over. Even with a torch in their inventory, your torch sits there bouncing up and down as it repeatedly tries to pick it up, preventing you from getting it back.

I don't know that I believe either of those, I think the take home message is if you want to drop trade torches, be careful, or just trade with trusted forum members.

    /facepalm :p

I remember 5 ll bk rings only being 2 hrs with 3ll-4ll being hr and hr gul/ist.

Too bad on the trade, only if you knew.

    That's not a scam... for once. :D

You can't swap unique charms of same type.
Once you saw the torch, you can perform a safe drop trade.

    1. Use a game with pass.
    2. Check the torch in trade.
    3. Drop and hope for server not to crash in those 3 seconds.

Since you can't have more then one torch, there's no risk. Excluding lag/server crash.

I hate trading on bnet, not to be mean but people like the TC that think your trying to scam when trading torches are annoying. You have to drop them get over it or don't trade torch for torch.

When I ubered alot almost everyone thought I was trying to scam them.
