Student suspended for saying "Mexican" A kid in the neighboring town of Meridian was given two days detention and a days suspension for using the word "Mexican". What he was doing was asking a question about wheter or not somebody who is an American citizen but immigrated from Mexico should be called a Mexican or an American. The principal was informed. The principal then interrogated a number of kids as to whether or not he had said "Mexican". Afterwards, the kid in question was dragged into the principal's office and told that the word "Mexican" is not to be used. Instead, the only acceptable word is "Hispanic". Let's look at the implications of this. I looked and I can't find the state of New Hispanic. There is no country of Hispanic to the south of us. I'd be willing to bet President Fox would be highly insulted. And what if this kid had used "Canadian" instead of "Mexican"? Would he have been punished for that? What about those who refer to themselves as Mexican? Are they going to be suspended for that? The entire Treasure Valley (Boise, Meridian, Nampa & Caldwell) has a substantial Mexican population. Most of them refer to themselves as Mexicans. As well as a large Basque and Bosnian and Ukranian population. We're not naive when it comes to immigrants. So what do you think?
