    Student suspended for saying "Mexican"

A kid in the neighboring town of Meridian was given two days detention and a days suspension for using the word "Mexican".

What he was doing was asking a question about wheter or not somebody who is an American citizen but immigrated from Mexico should be called a Mexican or an American. The principal was informed. The principal then interrogated a number of kids as to whether or not he had said "Mexican". Afterwards, the kid in question was dragged into the principal's office and told that the word "Mexican" is not to be used. Instead, the only acceptable word is "Hispanic".

Let's look at the implications of this. I looked and I can't find the state of New Hispanic. There is no country of Hispanic to the south of us. I'd be willing to bet President Fox would be highly insulted.
And what if this kid had used "Canadian" instead of "Mexican"? Would he have been punished for that? What about those who refer to themselves as Mexican? Are they going to be suspended for that?

The entire Treasure Valley (Boise, Meridian, Nampa & Caldwell) has a substantial Mexican population. Most of them refer to themselves as Mexicans. As well as a large Basque and Bosnian and Ukranian population. We're not naive when it comes to immigrants.

    So what do you think?

Why is Mexican not acceptable? It clearly isnt racist. Mexican = people from Mexico. As how Chinese = people from China. This school is jacked up.

Either we aren't hearing the whole story or "political correctness" has won out over sanity.

It depends upon the circumstances. Was the other kid really Mexican? or was he born in the U.S. or Latin America, or South America. Nicaraguans certainly aren't Mexican. If I was Nicaraguan and some kid insist on calling me Mexican even after I corrected him, I'd pop him in the mouth. If you were in Iraq, and some local kept on callling you French even after you told him you were an American, you'd probably pop him too. Anyways, the potential for violence warrants the correct choice of words. Besides, is the kid so special that the rules don't apply? Why can't the kid follow the rules, is he a freakin retar or something?

Woops, there goes my political correctiveness.

You have the whole story. Sad isn't it?

The other kid in question was from Mexico and had been a US citizen for a few years. And nobody had every been told "Mexican" was a bad word.

I'd like to see somebody try to tell President Fox that "Mexican" is a bad word. I looked and couldn't find the state of New Hispanic anywhere. Can anybody help me find New Hispanic? Please...?

If that's the whole story, it just shows once more how political correctness causes people to lose their common sense and intelligence.

How did the kid say "Mexican"? Normally? or intentionally teasing? How is race relations in the school? Sensitive? Did the other kid become a naturalized U.S. citizen? And this kid was still calling him a Mexican? Did the other kid pull a "Sarge" and say it 50 times in the other kid's face? In the principal's face?

just yesterday, teacher asked me to read this passage out to the class and there was a typo of "Africans" to something like "Mxicans" so I said mexicans and everyone laughed and she said I shouldn't make jokes about this because we were reading the South Africans being oppressed by the British.

So he was discriminating agaisnt himself?

I know that in C***** Inuit has become the more used, which is right, seeing as Eskimo translates to "east of raw meat" or something similar, but Indian is still just as common as Native American

On a similar note, during our unit on Indi...Native Americans in grade 7, we had a teacher-in-training doing the unit. From day one she stressed the proper naming of the Natives...any way, one day in class we were talking about what it would have been like for the Natives to see the white men arriving for the first time. My friend said something like "they could have been scared/catious (can't remember) of the greater technology. The TinT took this as him saying that the Natives were stupid, and he was suspended for a day or two

Normally, as you would in a typical conversation

We don't have those problems here.

Yes. The kid was asking how he should refer to the other kid. Common decency says you should refer to the other person as they wish to be.

    Nope.

From reading the article a few times, it appears one student asked if someone from mexico, who immigrates to another country is refered to as a mexican, or refered to as a someone of the other country, in this case the other country was america, and the other student was mexican.

So the kid tries to be courteous by wanting to know what the immigrant kid would prefer to be called, and for that he gets a suspended because of political correctness.

    So unbelievably stupid.
