It's an ESPN commercial and its still airing. Something like "without Sport, who would support the Nimrods?" It's pretty funny the first time you see it.
Many NBA teams got their names from social or geographical attributes of their city. The Lakers were orignally from Minneapolis, the land of 10,000 lakes. They moved to L.A. in the 60's. The name stuck with them.
Denver Nuggets? Don't know about that one. Maybe they dig up a lot of gold up in the Rocky Mountains.
New York Knickerbockers. It's an odd name but follows the same naming technique of most teams. And yes its ******** since they might as well called themselve the New York New Yorkers (from the Netherlands).
