    Sterilize Bad Parents

    And in today's Strange News...

    S.C. Official: Sterilize Bad Parents
Official in South Carolina, shocked by crime, says bad parents should be sterilized

    CHARLESTON, S.C., Oct. 1, 2006

(AP) A City Council member, reacting to a video store holdup believed to have been carried out by children, says parents who can't properly care for their kids should be sterilized.

"We pick up stray animals and spay them," Larry Shirley said in a story published Saturday by The Post and Courier of Charleston. "These mothers need to be spayed if they can't take care of theirs. Once they have a child and it's running the street, to let them continue to have children is totally unacceptable."

Shirley's comments come after police say a video store was held up by a group of children, including a 14-year-old girl suspected of wielding a BB gun that looked like a pistol.

The holdup happened about 9 p.m. Wednesday at a Hollywood Video store. A 14-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy were charged as juveniles with armed robbery. A 9-year-old boy was not charged because police said he was too young. He was released to his mother.

"What we've got is a failure in society, whether it's in Mount Pleasant with yuppie parents or whether it's on the East Side with poor crackhead parents," he said, referring to areas in and around Charleston.

State Sen. Robert Ford, a Charleston Democrat, agreed that the crime highlights a societal problem but dismissed Shirley's suggestion to sterilize people as "crazy."

"What Larry Shirley needs to talk about is getting City Council to provide some recreational facilities and activities for these kids and creating an atmosphere conducive to a normal society," said Ford, also a former councilman.

Sterilizing the parents is not going to fix the kids that are already bad.

I say we just euthanize the kids.

People should be required to take a test and go through parenting and discipline classes upon news of thier pregnancy. If they fail the class, or thier kids start turning into hethens, take the kids away, and the sterilize the parents.

    That's a lot of work.

A shot of potassium chloride would be much more efficient.

What would this test be like, who decides what good parenthing is? And what if they pass all the tests and take all the classes and one of their kids still turns out bad?

I know, it isn't feasible, and it would never even fly if some city or state tried to impliment it. I just think there should be something that can keep parent's in check.

How do we define "bad" parents? I turned out relatively fine, for example, and my sister is pretty good as well, though she's made some more unusual choices than I have. My brother, however, has done hard drugs, still smokes/drinks/does some drugs... he's 16. He had a girl pregnant at 14, but she miscarried. Would my brother be considered a "bad" child? If so, are my parents to blame, or are his friends - and if it's his friends, do THEIR parents qualify as "bad" parents?

There are just too many what-ifs in something like this. That's not to say I don't agree, I wish that there was something that could be done just as much as anyone else here. But it just isn't going to happen.

I was very confused: "How would killing all the germs on someone make them a better parent??"

Didn't we already try this in very limited amounts and then get supremely busted by the courts? I just can't see this being constitutional.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And who determines who is a good parent and who is a bad parent? Who sets this test?

    Well therein lies the problem.
I still wish there were some way to prevent bad parents from breeding.

As far as I know, Buck v. Bell is still active precedent, and that upholds state run sterilization of a woman who kept having idiot children.

Buck v. Bell was in reference to mentally handicapped individuals, not stupid parents. (In come instances, there is little difference...)

I doubt any state statute requiring the sterilization of fully capable individuals would hold up in court.

If only there was like, this guy who like, knew everything and was like, never wrong. Then we could just let him run everything, that'd be super-awesome.
