Static Field

how high can the range get for this skill, would it be viable pvp with a light sorc with max static that just defensively statics and teles and then ts and light to finish?

Static field is an amazingly underused skill in pvp. However, unlike pvm it doesn't bring their life to, at best, 1/3 or 1/2 (not sure how this works in pvm exactly), but it seems like it brings em down to 2/3 life all the time in my experience. However, I don't think it will work with most light sorcs. It works for me because I have hella -res (nova sorc). At level 1 with not that many +skill things (I use mana/life scs as opposed to light lifers), it extends a little bit further than the edges of my screen.

As to your question of whether to max it, thats a definate no. Its a 1 point wonder skill, theres no need for more. It doesn't reach more damage, just gets higher range, which I'm pretty sure has diminishing returns at high levels.

I usually use it against some of the more difficult bvcs who don't use bows. Stay away, sometimes cast a lightning or a few cbs at them, then static them while they try whirlwinding / teleporting up to me.

Two interesting quotes from Arreat Summit:

Static Field is Lightning damage, and can be resisted through Lightning Resistance.
Static Field is not affected by Conviction and Lower Resist.
So, it's pretty much totally ineffective no matter what. Even if it did take that 25% out of the life of a Player, it would still be merely 6.25% after 75% LR. Even with a BvCs 6300 life, that would be a mere 393.75 damage, which is a lot less than what your some other skills of yours could do (11k Blizzard can do a nice 2244 at the first hit, which is 569.90% of the Static damage).

Yes but if you maxed it and had insane range and fcr, you could essentially tele and cast a few statics and then orb or lightning them to finish right?

I dunno, static field "feels" like it does more damage when conviction is on a monster (pvm). But maybe it's just my eyes playing tricks on me. Maybe a stats guru can chime in with the real story. To be honest, I trust RTB and SSoG more than I trust the arreat summit!

And you would have found a great way to waste a ton of skill points

We tested it; It basically sucks. Terrible range. You want to stay that close to a whirling barb?

It does crap damage.

Go grab a Wirt's leg and swing it instead.

Wirt's > Static

Or make a crescent moon wirts leg and combine these two awesome ideas.
(ok well you can't make runewords in the leg... but IFYA COULD....)

Ask and you shall receive.

Summit's wrong. -% Lightning Resist *DOES*, in fact, boost the damage that Static Field deals. Also, the whole "can't take monsters below 50% life" thing is a bit of a myth, too- in reality, Static Field won't affect monsters that are below 50% life. If you cast static field around a monster with 51% life, static will indeed take him a bit below 50% (depending on how much -% Lightning Resist gear you've got), but will then be useless until he regenerates over 50% again.
